He accepted the Air Force Cross for extraordinary heroism during a mission in Nuristan Province, Afghanistan. When his team was attacked in a well-coordinated and deadly ambush while climbing near-vertical terrain to reach their objective, he provided suppressive fire to protect wounded soldiers and directed close air support strikes. Despite being hit three times, he controlled more than 50 attack runs and repeatedly repelled the enemy with "danger close" air strikes.
