Salicylate - aspirin (Bayer, Ecotrin, Astrin)

Headaches, muscle pain, inflammation and pain from arthritis, mild anticoagulant
Serum therapeutic range: 5mg/dl Inflammation: 15-30mg/dl Can displace other highly protein bound drugs If taken with acetaminophen, GI bleeding couldresult Side effects: fastric discomfort, tinnitis, vertigo, deafness (reversible) inc bleeding Should be taken with foods or at mealtime. Should not be taken with alcohol. |

Mild to moderate pain. Less toxic than aspirin.

COX-2 inhibitor - celecoxib (Celebrex)
|
Treat osteroarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Not indicated for clients <18yrs. Caution for clients with severe renal or liver disorders and those allergic to sulfonamides.

Treat pain from osteroarthritis.

Moderate to severe pain. Contraindicated in severe alcoholism or with use of narcotics. Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, constipation, headache and anxiety may occur.
