2. Collects information necessary to administer medication safely, including how quickly to infuse the medication and its action, purpose, side effects, normal dose, time of peak onset & nursing implications. Assesses client’s history of medication allergies.

3. Assesses compatibility of drug with existing IV solution (ie: primary line/solution).

4. Assesses patency of client’s existing IV infusion line by noting infusion rate of main IV line. Assesses IV insertion site for signs of infiltration or phlebitis: redness, pallor, swelling, tenderness on palpation.

5. Assembles supplies & prepares client by informing client that medication will be given through the IV equipment. Checks client’s identification by looking at identification bracelet & asking client’s name.

7. Assesses client’s understanding of purpose of medication therapy. Explains purpose of medication & side effects to client & explains that medication is to be given through existing IV line. Encourages client to report symptoms of discomfort at site.

8. Connects infusion tubing to medication bag. Allows solution to fill tubing by opening regulator flow clamp.

9. Hangs piggyback medication bag above level of primary fluid bag.

10. Connects tubing of piggyback to appropriate connector on primary infusion line. Wipes off needleless port & inserts tip of piggyback

11. Regulates flow rate of medication solution by adjusting regulator clamp (usually medication should infuse with 20 - 90 min.)

12. After medication has infused, checks flow regulator on primary infusion. The primary infusion should automatically begin to flow after the piggyback is empty. Regulates main infusion line to desired rate, if necessary.

13. Leaves secondary bag and tubing in place for future medication administration. Observes client for signs of adverse reactions. During 20-90 min of infusion, periodically checks infusion rate & condition of IV site.

14. Record volume of fluid in medication bag on intake and output form to monitor total fluid intake.
