Luster

The way that light shines off of a mineral. Can be described as 'metallic' or 'non-metallic'.

Streak

The color of the powder left behind when a mineral is rubbed on a surface.

Hardness

The ability of a mineral to scratch or be scratched. Talc is a 1, and Diamond is a 10.

Cleavage

Description of how a mineral will break; when broken, the mineral will break off into nice, even shapes.

Fracture

Description of how a mineral will break; when broken, the mineral will break in ANY direction with no discernible shapes.

Igneous Rocks

Rocks that are formed after being melted and cooled down. They come from magma/lava.

Sedimentary Rocks

Rocks that are formed after being compacted and cemented together. They come from sediment.

Metamorphic Rocks

Rocks that are formed after applying heat and pressure to another rock.

Parent Rock

The rock that a metamorphic rock came from.

Magma

Melted rock found below the surface of the Earth.

Lava

Melted rock found above the surface of the Earth.

Foliation

The pattern found on metamorphic rocks; when minerals align within a rock and all point in the same direction (due to the pressure applied to the rock).
