Anti-static Wrist Strap |
Used to safely ground a person working on very sensitive electronic equipment, to prevent the buildup of static electricity on their body, which can result in electrostatic discharge (ESD). |
Anti-static mat |
A flat surface that a keyboard or other electronic device can rest on or a person can stand on in order to discharge static electricity. The mat is either grounded or treated in such a manner that it absorbs static electricity. |
Crimper |
A tool the joins two pieces of metal or other ductile material (usually a wire and a metal plate) by deforming one or both of them to hold the other. |
Punch-down tool |
Used for inserting wire into insulation-displacement connectors on punch down blocks, patch panels, keystone modules, and surface mount boxes. |
Wire Strippers |
Used to strip the electrical insulation from electric wires. |
External Hard Drive Enclosure |
A specialized casing designed to hold and power disk drives while providing a mechanism to allow them to communicate to one or more separate computers. |
Loop-back Plug |
Tests the basic functionality of computer ports. |
Conduit |
A tube or trough for protecting electric wiring. |
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) |
The intrusion of outside electromagnetic signals in a transmission media, such as copper cabling. |
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) |
The sudden flow of electricity between two electrically charged objects caused by contact, an electrical short, or dielectric breakdown. A buildup of static electricity can be caused by tribocharging or by electrostatic induction. |
Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) |
The radio frequency spectrum, is a disturbance generated by an external source that affects an electrical circuit by electromagnetic induction, electrostatic coupling, or conduction. |
Blackout |
Complete loss of AC power. A blown fuse, damaged transformer, or downed power line can cause a blackout. |
Brownout |
Reduced voltage level of AC power that lasts for a period of time. |
Noise |
Interference from generators and lightning. Noise results in poor quality power, which can cause errors in a computer system. |
Spike |
Sudden increase in voltage that lasts for a short period and exceeds 100 percent of the normal voltage on a line. |
Surge |
Dramatic increase in voltage above the normal flow of electrical current. A power surge lasts for a few nanoseconds, or one-billionth of a second. |
Standby Power Supply (SPS) |
Helps protect against potential electrical power problems by providing a backup battery to supply power when the incoming voltage drops below the normal level. |
Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) |
Helps protect against potential electrical power problems by supplying a consistent level of electrical power to a computer or other device. |
Surge Suppressor |
Helps protect against damage from surges and spikes. A surge suppressor diverts extra electrical voltage that is on the line to the ground. |
Material Safety and Data Sheet |
A document that contains information on the potential health effects of exposure to chemicals, or other potentially dangerous substances, and on safe working procedures when handling chemical products. |
CHKDSK |
Checks the integrity of files and folders on a hard drive by scanning the file system. These tools might also check the disk surface for physical errors. (Scandisk) |
Defrag |
Reduce the fragmentation of (a file) by concatenating parts stored in separate locations on a disk. |
Disk Cleanup |
A computer maintenance utility included in Microsoft Windows designed to free up disk space on a computer's hard drive. |
FDISK |
A command-line utility used on PCs to partition hard drive space, and other storage media space, into logical drives or partitions and assigns drive letters such as C, D, E, etc. |
Scandisk |
Checks the integrity of files and folders on a hard drive by scanning the file system. These tools might also check the disk surface for physical errors. (CHKDSK) |
Disk Management |
Clears space on a hard drive by searching for files that can be safely deleted. |
Anti-virus Applications |
Computer software used to prevent, detect and remove malicious software. Antivirus software was originally developed to detect and remove computer viruses, hence the name. |
Spyware |
Software that enables a user to obtain covert information about another's computer activities by transmitting data covertly from their hard drive. |
Self Grounding |
The action or grounding yourself or making a ground outlet if you don't have one. |
Cable Tie |
A type of fastener, for holding items together, primarily electric cables or wires. |
Flat-head Screwdriver |
A screwdriver with a "Flat Head". |
Toner Probe |
The toner part is connected to a cable at one end using specific adapters. The toner generates a tone that travels the length of the cable. The probe part traces the cable. When the probe is in near proximity to the cable to which the toner is attached, the tone can be heard through a speaker in the probe. |
Digital Multimeter |
A test tool used to measure two or more electrical values—principally voltage (volts), current (amps) and resistance (ohms). |
Hex Driver |
Used to drive bolts and screws that have a hexagonal socket in the head (internal-wrenching hexagon drive). |
Torx Screwdriver |
A type of screw head characterized by a 6-point star-shaped pattern. |
Tweezers |
A small instrument like a pair of pincers for plucking out hairs and picking up small objects. |
Wire Cutters |
A tool for cutting wire. |
Compressed Air |
Air that has been compressed to a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure. |
Needle-nose Pliers |
Cutting and holding pliers used by artisans, jewelry designers, electricians, network engineers and other tradesmen to bend, re-position and snip wire. |
Phillips Head Screwdriver |
A screwdriver having a cross-shaped tip rather than the rectangular tip of a standard (flat-blade) screwdriver. |
System File Checker (SFC) |
Scans the operating system’s critical files and replaces files that are corrupt. |
