What was the "Red Scare" and why did it occur?
The "Red Scare" refers to Communism which is feared by Americans in the 1920s. This was caused by the Russian Revolution in which Russia was taken over by communists. America was afraid of the huge immigration (from places like Russia) and Anarchism would take over the country. In general Americans were afraid of Political Radicalism.
What is Anarchism? What happened on Wallstreet in 1920?
Anarchism is the belief in a world without government. In the 1920s anarchism was a great fear for Americans. In 1920 some anarchists set off a huge bomb on Wallstreet.
Who were Sacco and Vanzetti?
Sacco and Vanzetti were 2 italian immigrants working in a shoe factory and Vanzetti was a fish peddler. They were also anarchists and draft dodgers. In 1921 Raintree, Massachusetts; Sacco and Vanzetti were blamed for the murder of a paymaster. they were eventually convicted by a jury and a biased judged. They were executed in the electric chair in 1927.
Who was A. Mitchell Palmer?
A. Mitchell Palmer was the Attorney General of the U.S. He began the Palmer Raids against political radicals. He arrested man and deported some. The was a cause to the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti.
What was the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) in the 1920s?
In the 1920s the KKK reemerged newly energized. It was not anti-black, jew, immigrant, and catholic. They held huge rallies thoughout the country. They had such an influence the the politicians had to ally themselves with the KKK or they would lose everytime.
This act was passed by congress because the US was being overrun by immigrants. This was allow congress to take 3% of each race from the 1910 Census and only allow this amount to immigrate from each country per year.

This has the same principle as the Emergency Quota Act only it took the 1890 Census and cut the percentage down to 2%.
