1) Delaware, Maryland, Missouri, and Kentucky were all of these.


2) Slavery was legal in all of these states, but there weren't many enslaved people. They all had ties with both the North and the South.


3) Missouri could control parts of the Mississippi River and major routes to the West. Kentucky controlled the Ohio River. Delaware was close to Philadelphia. Maryland was close to Richmond, the Confederate capital. Washington D.C. also laid within the state.

Border States

1) This strategy would prevent supplies form reaching the Confederates. It also would keep the South from exporting its cotton crop; or selling it to other countries.


2) A blockade is an effort to cut off supplies, war material, or communications from a particular area by force.

Blockade

1) North's strategy was called this because in it, they would split the Confederacy in two and cut Southern supply lines. This is supposed to represent after the snake squeezes its prey to death.

2.The North intended to gain control of the en- tire Mississippi River, and split the Confederacy in two.


3. The North would then capture Richmond, Virginia.

Anaconda Plan

1) This man got his nickname Stonewall because he was seen holding out heroically like a Stonewall

3) This man getting his nickname as Stonewall might have scared the North a little bit, because this man and his army will hold his ground, and not let anyone past him.

Thomas Jackson

1) The Union troops commander was General Irvin McDowell. The Confederacy troops commander was General P.G.T. Bearuregard.


2) This battle took place in northern Virginia, about 5 miles from the town of Manassas Junction near a small river call Bull Run.


3) The Confederate army won this battle.


4) After this battle, the Northerners realized that this war could be a long, difficult, and costly struggle.

First Battle of Bull Run

1) A river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake.


2) One of the Northerners major goal was to control the Mississippi River, including the tributaries.

Tributaries

1) A warship with armor plating in the 1800's.


2) There was the Virginia which was on the Confederate's side, and the Monitor which was on the Union's side.


3) The outcome of the first battle between these was interesting. Neither ship could sink the other. This battle was historic because it was the first ever between metal-covered ships.

Ironclad

1) The Union leader of this battle was General Grant, and the Confederate leader of this battle was General P. G. T. Beauregard, and Albert Sidney Johnston.


2) This battle took place on April 6, 1862.


3) This battle took place at Pittsburg Landing, 20 miles from Corinth. It was nearby a church named Shiloh.


4) The Union won this battle.


5) Together the two armies suffered more than 23,000 casualties.


6) The Union made great progress by winning this battle. It gave the Union army greater control of the Mississippi River valley.

Battle of Shiloh
