What is the San Andreas Fault an example of?
Strike-slip Fault
What causes changes in density in the asthenosphere?
Thermal Energy
What is the most common type of a divergent boundary?
Mid Ocean Ridges
What can continental-oceanic collisions also be called?
Divergent boundaries
What do tectonic plates "float" on?
The Asthenosphere
What is tension stress?
Stress pulling an object
What is compression stress?
Stress squeezing an object
What do scientists use the global positioning system for?
To measure tectonic plate motion
What is associated with transform boundaries?
Earthquakes
What type of boundary is formed when plates slide past each other?
Transform
What type of boundary is formed when plates separate?
Divergent
What type of boundary is formed when plates collide?
Convergent
What is a boundary?
The area where two tectonic plates meet
What is a possible result of plates moving along a transform boundary?
Earthquakes
What do tectonic plates consist of?
Both continental and oceanic crust.
What can tectonic plates form when they converge?
Mountains
What is the role of the asthenosphere in the movement of tectonic plates?
The asthenosphere is a layer made of solid rock that flows very slowly. The tectonic plates float, or move very slowly on top of the asthenosphere.
If the Earth's crust is growing at mid-ocean ridges, why doesn't the Earth grow larger?
Through sea floor spreading, the older lithosphere is pushed away from the mid-ocean ridge and over time is subducted at the subduction zone where the rock is recycled and begins the cycle all over again.
Why are the Appalachian Mountains now located in the middle of the North American plate?
The Appalachian Mountains were formed when The North American and African plate collided. Over time the plates separated and moved that the mountains were no longer at the plate boundary.
