Why would we use single wire method wire locking? |
For components which are closely spaced or in closegeometrical patterns. |
What is the preferred wire locking method? |
Double twist method |
What are the principles of wire locking? 8 |
1. Locking wire is single use 2. Do not overstress or damage it 3. Dont install so it can come loose with vibration 4. Install so the angle achieves a locking effect 5. No more than 8cm long 6. Depose debris correctly 7. On flexable mounting points make sure wire doesn't impare mounting characteristics or locking 8. Maximum number of parts to be locked with double twist method is 3 |
What are locking tabs? |
An attachment point for wirelocking just one componant. |
What is a locking plate? |
A plate fitted over the nut after tightening for wire locking |
What two processes can copper wire locking be used for? |
Restraint - thick copper wire used to protect a control or switch from accidental opperation however can be operated with a bit of force when needed. Telltale - thin wire used to indicate systems have operated accidentally e.g switches or jetterson |
What is this? And what is it used for? |
Dzus fastner to secure some panels and components |
What is this? And what is it used for? |
Oddie fastner to secire some panels and components |
What is this? |
Quick release pin |
What is this? What is it used for? |
Terry pin used instead of split pinning to lock a slotted/castelated nut on a bolt |
What are these and what are they used for? |

What is this and what is it used for? |
Castellated/slotted nut used for split pinning |
What are these? Why are they good? |
Wing nut which can be operated with your fingers |
What is thos and its use? What should you remember when tightnening and loosening these? |
Locking nuts the first secures the item the second secures the first nut. Prevents loosening through vibration. Always use two spanners. |
What is this and its use? |
Split pins used for passing through the hole on a bolt to lock on slotted/castellated nuts |
What is this and three purposes? |
Plain washer used to provide a seatkng area for a nut to prevemt scoring on tightening Acts as a spacer Grips nut or bolt once tight to prevent vibrating loose |
What is this and its use? |
Tab washer same as a plain washer but with the locking leg. Either single or multiple |
What is this? |
Shake proof washer |
What is this when does it compress? |

What types of circlips are there? What are there purpose? |
Locking circular nuts and cylindrical parts |
What are these? |
Internal/external circlip pliers |
What are these? |
External circlip pliers |
What are theseand what are they used for? |
Grub screws used to secure knobs and switches on control boxes and avionic equiptment. |
What is loctite/threadlock |
Adhesive fluid used to lock grub screws. Prevents damage to threads. |
What is peening? |
Where you slightly damage threads on screw threads of the nut and bolt. Done with a centre punch |
