Aminoglycoside eye drops

Aminoglycoside eye drops

Spectrum: gram negatives are really it. Gentamicin and tobramycin have antipseudomonal activity and should therefore be reserved for use only by opthamologists for serious infections not responsding to other treatments, after a culture has been taken
Dosage of aminoglycoside eye drops
Conjunctivitis: same as for Bleph-10 and Brolene: 1 drop q2-4h for 2/7 then qid for 5/7 - Use Tobrex ointment tds or at bedtime as adjunct

For other infections (soframycin): q2h then tds if there is an improvement

For prophylaxis (Genoptic, Tobrex): qid until healed
Quinolone eye drops

1. Ofloxacin (Occuflox, 0.3%.5ml)
2. Ciprofloxacin (CiloQuin, Ciloxan, 0.3%.5ml)
Quinolones eye drops
- There are no CI/cautions
- Pregnancy
- BF
- A/Es
Cat B3 - unlikely to harm, ltd data
BF - suitable if neccessary
Adverse Effects:
irritation, unpleasant taste, infrequent photophobia
Quinolone eye drops

- Excellent gram -ve, good gram positive. Similar to tobramycin
- Reserve use to prevent emergence of resistence
- Also has been associated with corneal ulceration so use only by specialists for keratitis
- same as for others in conjunctivitis
Chloramphenicol

- Chlorsig, Chloromycetin drops and ointment - 0.5%.10ml, 1%.4g oint
- Also minims single use
- Cat A, Safe, Safe
- NO common A/Es, may not even cause aplastic anaemia
Aciclovir

- Preg category

Zovirax 3%.4.5g ointment
- Herpes Simplex (and herpes zoster sometimes)
- B3 - safe to use
- S/Es just stinging commonly
- 1cm 5 times daily for 14 days or 3 days after epithelium is healed, whichever is shorter
