ACTION VERBS
a word belonging to the part of speech that is the center of the predicate and which describes an act or activity
Ex: 'gurgle' and 'giggle,' - words which describe activity
NO-ACTION VERBS
'To be' verbs (static) do not describe action but define or describe a noun. (ex: to be, appear, become, reamain, feel)
TRANSITIVE VERB
Has two characteristics. 1.) it is an action verb, expressing a doable activity like kick, want, paint, write etc. 2.) it must have a direct object,something or someone who receives the action.
INTRANITIVE VERB
A verb which does not take an object. ex: sleep, complain and die, are intransitive.
SUBJECTIVE COMPLEMENT
When complementing words are nouns, pronouns or adjectives and they 'complement(add something) to the subject. ex: Darlene is a mechanic.
AUXILIARY VERB
Helping verbs. Allow us to form future, conditional, progressive and perfect verb tenses. ex: I make / I made
COMPOUND VERB
A verb formed by the combination of an auxiliary verb followed by the main verb.
ex: will have been making
VERBALS
A verb form that functions in a sentence as a noun or a modifier rather than as a verb.
3 types: infinitive, present participle, past participle
INFINITIVE
"TO" form of a verb.
unconjugated verb form (cannot use alone in a complete sentence.)
PRESENT PARTICIPLE
"ING" form of verb.

PAST PARTICIPLE
"ED" form of verb.
Unconjugated verb form(cannot use alone in a complete sentence).
CONJUCATED
VERB
A verb that shows tense (when the activity happened), person (who engaged in the activity), and number (how many involved).
HELPING VERB
HAVE: have, has, had
DO: do, does, did
BE: be, am, is, are, was,
were,being, been
MODALS
Helping verebs that do not indicate tense: can,could,may,might,must,
shall,should,will,would (ought to)
MAIN VERB
always kind of verb that can change tense.
REGULAR VERB
A word whose past-tense and past participle forms end in 'ed'
IRREGULAR VERB
A word whose past-tense and part pasticiple do NOT end in 'ed'. (rode, ridden)
PARTICLES
Verbs followed by words that look like prepositions but are part of the verbs meaning. (give in, bring up)
