First state of transition

First phase is separation, signifies detachment of the individual from a group and from himself. Clean slate, the old washed away.

Second state of transition.

Liminal period. Filled with ambiguity and ordeals. It is undefined state between two beings. No identity, bonding between the neophytes. Together in seclusion, polluting and invisible. Stage of reflection, have to think about their society and form their own thoughts.

Third stage of transition.

Individual achieves a stable state, he has achieved something. He has become something new. Reborn into something better then before. Now has clearly defined rights and obligations. Recognised by society.

What kind of relationship is found between neophyte and instructor?

Instructor has compete authority and neophytes have complete submission. Between neophytes there is complete equality.

What is sacra?

Heart of the liminal matter, three parts of communication: what is shown, what is done and what is said. Drums, music, masks etc.

What can be said about rituals?

Repetitive, scale not bound. Not invented on the spot, originates from society, a way of enduring crisis, keeps people together.
