Check Dr’s orders.Check for latex allergy. Gather equip.ID patient and determine need for suctioning. Introduce & explain the procedure. Provide privacy.

Set up work environment: position bed, trashcan and bedside table.

Turn on suction device to appropriate mm Hg and check that it is functioning properly.

* Increase the patient’s supplemental oxygen and ask the patient to take several deep breaths.

Open sterile suction package using aseptic technique.Carefully remove sterile box, touching only outside surface. Pour saline into the sterile box.

*Put on sterile gloves.

Pick up the sterile catheter. Pick up the connecting tubing with the non-
dominant hand and connect the tubing and suction catheter.

Dip the tip of the catheter into the container of sterile saline. Occlude the suction valve to check suction.

Remove the oxygen delivery device if appropriate with your non-dominant hand.

Using your dominant hand, gently and quickly insert the suction catheter into the trachea 2.5-3.5” (or no more than ½ inch past the length of the tracheal tube). If patient coughs, withdraw the catheter at least ½” prior to applying suction.

Withdraw catheter at least ½” b4 applying suction. Apply suction as you gently remove catheter &roll it between your fingers. Do not suct. for more than 10-15sec each time

*Allow 30sec-1min between passes if more suctioning need. *Reapply
oxygen delivery device in between passes, if needed.Limit suct/ to 3 x, flushing catheter w/saline ea. X time.

Remove gloves and dispose of all equipment.

Assess effective of suctioning. Auscultate breath sounds. * Place the patient in a comfortable position, with side rails up
and the bed in the lowest position.

Turn off suction device and return oxygen to prescribed flow rate.
