Pick up the sterile catheter. Pick up the connecting tubing with the non-
dominant hand and connect the tubing and suction catheter. |

Dip the tip of the catheter into the container of sterile saline. Occlude the suction valve to check suction.

Remove the oxygen delivery device if appropriate with your non-dominant hand.

Using your dominant hand, gently and quickly insert the suction catheter into the trachea 2.5-3.5” (or no more than ½ inch past the length of the tracheal tube). If patient coughs, withdraw the catheter at least ½” prior to applying suction.

Withdraw catheter at least ½” b4 applying suction. Apply suction as you gently remove catheter &roll it between your fingers. Do not suct. for more than 10-15sec each time

oxygen delivery device in between passes, if needed.Limit suct/ to 3 x, flushing catheter w/saline ea. X time. |
