Apply tourniquet approximately 3-4 inches above intended site and palpate for an appropriate vein. Then, release tourniquet.

Cleanse the site with antiseptic solution using a circular motion or Chlorhexidine using friction. Then reapply tourniquet.

Holding skin taught; insert the needle into the skin at a 10-15 degree angle.

When blood returns thru lumen of needle, advance the needle an additional 1/8th-1/4th inch further into vein.Push catheter off needle advancing until hub is at the venipuncture site. Retract needle.*Dispose of needle appropriately.

Apply pressure slightly above the venipuncture site.

*Remove cap from ext. tubing & attach to hub while stabil.catheter with non-dominant hand.Check for patency & blood return w/extension tubing & normal saline filled syringe.

Place sterile transparent dressing over venipuncture site, then secure with tape.

Label the transparent dressing with Date, Time, Gauge & Initials.

Secure extension tubing on arm with additional tape. Attach IV tubing to extension tubing.
