Position patient on his back with thighs slightly apart. Assess bladder fullness.

*Clean perineal area (tip to base). Visualize meatus. Rinse and dry.

Remove gloves. Perform hand hygiene.

Set up work environment: position bed, trashcan and a clean bedside table.

Open sterile catheterization tray on a clean bedside table using sterile technique.

Open sterile drape and place on patient’s thighs. Place fenestrated drape over patient so that only the area around the penis is exposed.

*Put on sterile gloves.

Open all supplies. Open povidone iodine swabsticks. Attach sterile water filled syringe to balloon port and leave syringe in place. Lubricate tip of catheter 4”-6”.

Lift penis w/non-dom. hand &retract foreskin.Using a circular motion, clean penis w/sterile swabs. Clean penis moving from meatus down glans, using new swabstick each time.

Using your dominant hand grasp catheter and insert slowly into the urethra.Insert to the bifurcation (hub) of the catheter.

*Hold catheter securely with non-dominant hand at meatus. Use dominant hand to inflate balloon.

Gently pull back on catheter after balloon is inflated until resistance is felt.

Remove equipment. Remove gloves. Secure catheter to the patient’s inner thigh. Place Indwelling catheter bag below level of the bladder.

Put on clean gloves. Wash and dry perineal area as needed. Obtain urine specimen if needed. Remove gloves.

*Place the patient in a comfortable position, with side rails up and the bed in the lowest position.
