Position patient to dorsal recumbent position with knees flexed and legs abducted. Assess bladder for fullness.

*Clean perineal area (front to back). Visualize meatus. Rinse and dry.

Set up work environment: position bed, trashcan and bedside table.

Open sterile catheterization tray on a clean bedside table using sterile
technique.

Unfold sterile drape and place between patient’s legs. Unfold fenestrated drape and place over the perineal area exposing the labia.

Open all supplies. Open povidone iodine swabsticks. Attach sterile water filled syringe to balloon port and leave syringe in place. Lubricate tip of catheter 1”-2”.

W/non-dom hand spread labia & ID meatus.P/u swabstick w/dom. hand. Clean labial fold far away from top to bot.Clean other labial fold&over meatus.New sterile swab

Using dom. hand to grasp catheter &insert slowly into urethra. Insert catheter 2-3 inches until urine flows; advance an additional 2-3 inches.

*Hold catheter securely with non-dominant hand at meatus. Use dominant hand to inflate balloon.

Gently pull back on catheter after balloon is inflated until resistance is felt.

Remove equipment. Remove gloves. Secure catheter to the patient’s inner
thigh. Place Indwelling catheter bag below level of the bladder.

Put on clean gloves. Wash and dry perineal area as needed. Obtain urine specimen if needed. Remove gloves.
