The Eye
The front part of the eye (curved and acts as a lens) is the cornea. Below this, the anterior chamber is filled with aqueous humour, which separates the cornea from the iris (a structure that has an adjustable aperture and is the coloured part of the eye, controlling the amount of light entering. Light then passes through the crystalline lens which is adjustable and assists the cornea in producing a focused image on the retina. Behind the lens is the main cavity of the eye: the vitreous humour. Then the retina, containing the photoreceptors.
Cones
Differently sensitive to long, middle and short wavelengths of light which support colour vision (phototopic vision), high concentration in the foveal pit➡️have good acuity (ability to distinguish fine details of the image)
Rods
Mostly just outside the fovea: achromatic, better sensitivity than cones at low light levels. All rods contain rhodopsin (photopigment) in their outer segments. Rods respond very well to extremely dim conditions (scotopic vision)
