Defense

Getting a difficult ball back anyway you can. No time to execute a good quality stroke

Ready position, split step

Neutral position used in tennis to prepare for every shot. Allows a player to determine what direction the ball is coming and then spring quickly to get moving in correct direction direction quickly.

Stay down on the ball

Keeping perfect position while hitting the ball for a half second after the ball leaves the racket.

Tough ball

A shot that comes in from an opponent that is difficult to get in good position to hit. It's a ball that requires a defensive reaction to hitting

Visualize

Keep your head down while hitting and visualize in your mind where you want the ball to land in the court without looking at the court.

Offensive lob

Directed ball hit over the head of your opponent at the net often times for a winner

Winner

Ball hit into the opponent's court at the opponent cannot touch with the racket

Hit out on the ball

When striking the ball push the racquet forward an extra 6 inches in order to improve the distance on the ball and Drive it back closer to the Baseline

Offense

When you're able to get in good position in time to strike the ball with authority and direction. If the ball with more speed and place it in the court where you intended it to go.

Safe shot

A ball that you cannot play offense on but you have the control to place it on the court and get close to your target

Approach shot

A ball hit in order to continue on to the net for a valley

Anticipate

Thinking about where your opponent might hit their necks shot on the court

First three balls

Work hard to get the first three balls back on every point. Once you get the first three balls back you have your rhythm and can play a Long point

Volley

A very shark blocking type stroke hit from very close to the net while the ball is still in the air. Offensive volleys can be easy to put away and win points
