Sense
What are the five senses
Smell, taste, sight, hearing, and touch and pressure
The sense of smell
Olfaction
The organ of smell. It also moistens, warms, and filters air that passes through it.
Nose
A receptor, located in the upper portions of the nose, that is sensitive to gases and dissolved chemicals
Olfactory receptor
A chemical sense produced by stimulation of the taste buds.
Gustatory sense, or taste
What are the four basic taste sensations
Salty sweet sour and bitter
The tip of the tongue contains what two receptors
Sweet and salty
Side of the tongue contain what receptors
Sour
The back of the tongue contains what receptor
Bitter
A group of specialized tissues that permits site.
Eye
Tears, lashes, eyelids, muscle, and fatty tissues surround and protect the eye
The globe of the eye. It is made up of concentric coats, or tunics.
Eyeball
The outermost, external protective layer of the eye. It consist of the white, Opaque Sclera and the transparent cornea.
Fibrous tunic
The transparent outer layer of the Eye
Cornea
The white outer layer of the Eye
Sclera
The part of the uvea that absorbs excess light rays
Choroid
The part of the uvea that changes the shape of the lens
Ciliary body
The part of the uvea that regulates the size of the pupil and gives the items color
Iris
The dark opening the eye, surrounded by the iris, through which light rays pass
Pupil
The part of the ear containing the auditory ossicles, the oval window, and the round window. It is also called the tympanic cavity
Middle ear
A tube that joins the nasopharynx and the middle ear cavity. The tube is also called auditory tube
Eustachian tube
The three tiny bones in the middle ear: the malleus, the incus, and the stapes. These bones transmit and amplify vibrations
Auditory ossicles
The part of the ear consisting of the vestibule, the semicircular canals, and the Cochlea
Inner ear
The middle part of the inner ear, involved in balance
Vestibule
One of the three curved passages in the inner ear that detect motion and govern balance
Semicircular Canal
The snail shaped, spiral tube that contains the organ of Corti, the receptor for hearing
Cochlea
Those passages of the vestibule, the semi circular canals, and the cochlea that contain receptors for hearing and equilibrium. The term is loosely used as a synonym for the inner ear
Labyrinth
It waxy substance secreted by the external ear. It is also called ear wax
Cerumen
The light sensitive nerve cell layer of the eye that contains the rods and cones
Retina
A photo receptor for black-and-white vision. Essential for vision in dim light and for peripheral vision
Rod
A photoreceptor for color vision and visual acuity
Come
A clear, watery fluid that fills the anterior cavity of the eye and circulates in the anterior and posterior chambers
Aqueous humor
A transparent jellylike substance that fills the posterior cavity of the eye, between the lens and the retina.
Vitreous humor
The adjustment of the Eye for close or distant vision, which is primarily achieved through changing the curvature of the lens
Accommodation
The organ of hearing. It consists of three parts
Ear
The part of the ear consisting of the Auricle and the external auditory meatus. It ends at the Tympanic membrane
External ear
The eardrum, which separates the external from the middle ear, covers the auditory canal, and transmits sound vibrations to the inner ear by the auditory ossicles
Tympanic membrane
