Because they meet the strict requirements of having been made in the United States, having at least 51% corn in thier mash bill, they can't be distilled at higher than 80% alcohol by volume and they must go into the Aging Barrel at no more than 62.5% alcohol and the barrels have to be new and made of charred Oak and they also have to be aged at least 2 years. If all these requirements are met they can be called straight whiskeys.

True with one exception. Straight rye whiskey has to be made with at least 51% rye and straight wheat whiskeys must contain at least 51% wheat in its' respective Mash bill.
