Verbal Mnemonics

Gruneberg(1973) = Found 30% of students used mnemonics.

Gidden et al(1983) = Verbal mnemonics were effective with teaching children with disabilities, although some children didn't recall after 12 months.

Acronyms

Where a word or sentence is formed from the initial letters of other words. For example ROYGBIV (Roy G. Biv) is used to remember the colors of the rainbow.

Acrostics

An acrostic is a poem or sentence where the first letter in each line or word forms the item to be remembered. For example, the planet 'rhyme' is an acrostic.

Rhymes

Groups of words with identity or rhythm. For example, using the 'twinkle twinkle' tune helps children to remember the alphabet.

Chunking

Changing a long string of numbers or letters into 'chunks' to make the information easier to remember.

Loci

'Loci' is Greek for 'places' and is a basic method for visual mnemonics. The learner associates parts of the material to be related to different places of a location.

The Keyword Method

Atkinson and Raugh (1975)

Used for associating two pieces of information. For instance, it could be an image which links to a word in two languages.

Spider Diagrams and Mind Maps

Causing a visual image should aid the triggering or recall of the information. These techniques use visual imagery to remember paths between information and facts.

Limitations of Mnemonics

Most experiments have been done in lab conditions.
