When I initially began Boy Scouts, I largely depended on my brother and his friends for help and assistance. Eventually, my brother and his friends around his age graduated, and while many moved on to serve as adult leaders, all of them eventually left for college. With this large amount of support missing from my usual routine, I felt lost for a significant amount of time, before I participated in a Philmont trek in the summer before my freshman year of high school. During the Philmont trek, as the youngest member of the crew, I felt highly unprepared due to my overall lack of experience with high adventure and large amounts of leadership; however, despite developing a blister on the first day, I found solace with my crew as they taught me valuable skills that would help me survive the journey. From their exemplary leadership and teachings, I quickly learned not only how to help myself, but also how to assist and guide others as a leader.…

With an ensemble as large as the Marching Pioneers, there is no physically possible way 4 top tier leaders can give everyone the attention they need. Section leaders are necessary for the success of our fine organization, and there’s nothing more satisfying than being part of a leadership team that can add to the already growing success of this talented group. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

I now had the title of section leader in the band, and was also an upperclassmen of the football team. It wasn’t exactly as easy as it seemed from those of the past. The sophomores thought they knew everything just because they had been there one year before, and the freshman thought they were hot shit for making it through middle school. It was painful to witness the underclassmen of football only squat halfway down, or the underclassmen of band march out of time, and have your advice go in one ear and right out the other. I decided that I needed some type of legitimacy as a leader.…
