It all began with the corruption of the Catholic church and when Thomas Cartwright (An English Puritan) wanted to reform the church. In 1590 Thomas was arrested for trying to reform it. Thirty years after that the Mayflower left England in July of 1920 it had to turn back twice due to the other ship they were traveling with. Their original goal was to arrive in what we call Virginia today. The troubles the puritans faced hadn't even begun until they were on land. Forty-five of the original one hundred that arrived on the Mayflower died and were buried on Cole’s Hill. A lot died from diseases like Scurvy and some dies from lack of shelter. In 1621 the Puritans and Pilgrims celebrated their survival through the winter that almost killed them with deathly low temperatures and incredibly low amounts of food. They celebrated Thanksgiving by inviting Indians over. They suffered from the lack of food because they landed in the new world during winter so it was impossible to grow any sort of food for them to live off of. Three years after that in 1630 Massachusetts is founded by Jhon Withrop and England starts sending ships over to help colonize it. Which led to over one thousand new colonists arriving in Massachusetts from England. Four years after that their governor Jhon Withrop loses power. He lost his power by a bunch of delegates from all over Massachusetts voted him off for producing a royal charter. John Withrop was a Puritan lawyer leading the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Later in 1635 Roger Williams a minister of the Salem church was banished out of the state. (Or colony) He was kicked out because of his radical beliefs and when he went up against the Puritans and told them they had separated from the Catholic church. The Puritans just told him that the church was corrupt.
One year later the same man Roger Williams founds Providence. (Rhode Island) this was the first settlement in North America to accept freedom of religion. In the same year of 1636 Harvard University was founded in Massachusetts.
