It would be considerably prejudicial to claim shareholder value is the only purpose of a corporation, albeit, that is the most important single aspect for long-term survival of any organization. However, one can have a solid purpose and scope and still conduct strategic outreach for the sole purpose of genuinely benefiting those less fortunate. The basic premise for any firm is to make money, and with positive cash flow in hand, we expect them to conduct themselves in a manner that brings about positive change in the global community. The only issue here with this myopic view of organizations is the expectation that they “must” or “should” conduct a corporate social welfare program. The expectancy is noble and just, but one must never look beyond the most …show more content…
Righteous is this woman and her drive to make the world a better place and on her march she manages to turn a nice profit…a nice 6.7% increase in net profit in 2006. Acknowledging the stretch it is in calling the White Dog Café a MNC, however, Prahalad and Hammond would view Wicks as a visionary in her field and applaud her efforts. They would call her one of the many terms they use (entrepreneurial, forward thinking, business savvy) as they state, businesses can gain three important advantages by serving the poor- a new source of revenue growth, greater efficiency, and access to innovation. The White Dog Café is a living testament to all three of those principles and Wicks is making an impact and a profit. Although, one must be careful when treading with the firm in the deep of societal responsibility as evidenced by the buyout of Ben and Jerry's and the Body Shop. As long as you are making money and managing your firm in a way that increases shareholder value—be a altruistic and giving as you want, but misstep and you are out. There is no mechanical panacea for the execution of this strategy but as long as we keep our eye on the prize, fight the good fight, help when we can, the world will
