One example from the early chapters of Where the Red Fern Grows that Wilson Rawls shows the theme to be determination is when Billy earns enough money to buy the pups. “A year passed. I was twelve. I was over the halfway mark. I had twenty-seven dollars and forty six cents. My spirits soared. I worked harder. Another year crawled by slowly by, and then the great day came. The hard grind was over. I had it-my fifty dollars!”(Page 21). Although I was worn down to a frazzle, I was a happy boy.” This is an example of the theme determination because he worked hard all through summer and into late fall training the pups to do tricks such as the tree barking trick and even though he was worn out and exhausted. Billy wanted to train the pups and since he was determined to train them he was able to train
