A famous actress, Gillian Anderson once said, “Just remember, you can do anything you set your mind to, but it takes action, perseverance, and facing your fears.”In the book Where the Red Fern Grows, Wilson Rawls shows the theme to be, If you put your mind to something, you can achieve anything because of all of through all of the determination Billy puts into getting what he wanted.

One example from the early chapters of Where the Red Fern Grows that Wilson Rawls shows the theme to be determination is when Billy earns enough money to buy the pups. “A year passed. I was twelve. I was over the halfway mark. I had twenty-seven dollars and forty six cents. My spirits soared. I worked harder. Another year crawled by slowly by, and then the great day came. The hard grind was over. I had it-my fifty dollars!”(Page 21). This example is an example of the determination because he really wanted dogs and he put his mind to it and worked really hard for two years by catching small animals in traps, picking berries to sell, selling bait to fishermen and making bread to sell to earn enough money to buy the pups.

Although I was worn down to a frazzle, I was a happy boy.” This is an example of the theme determination because he worked hard all through summer and into late fall training the pups to do tricks such as the tree barking trick and even though he was worn out and exhausted.
