Home. This four letter word can have a variety of meanings. For most it means family, comfort, warmth, and security. Sadly for others it means abuse, fear, neglect, and hunger. A new study by the Family Research Council has found that only forty-six percent of children in the United States will reach the age of seventeen in intact homes with married biological parents. (Bohon) However, the actual definition of home is the place where one lives personally, especially as a member of a family or household. Home can be a variety of different things. It can be an apartment, a house, a cottage, or even what you call your residence. My definition of home is the place that I know no matter what happens I can always go to feel safe and comfortable. I have been lucky enough in my life to live in a house where I can come home to a family that loves me and has provided me with not only the things that I needed but wanted as well. My grandparents have been like my parents taking me in when I was three and raising me as their own, my home is anywhere that they are. Home is where my family is, the people that love me the most and no matter what always will. Home is where it all started, where your family started. The place I feel safe, feel like nothing in the entire world can hurt me. Home is also where my favorite sports team plays, my favorite college, or even my favorite vacation spot. Where did the word “home” even start? What is a “home”? Home comes from the old English language meaning place of residence or origin. Using home as a noun means, a house, apartment, or other shelter that is the usual residence of a person, family, or household. Home can also be used as an adjective. Home could mean principal or main, or even a sports arena in the sense that, that is the center of operations for a team. (Company) Home can be anything that you want it to be. Your actual family that you come from or even a family that isn’t blood can be your home. Home is where it all started, where your family originated and where your life started. Eventually in life we move away from where our family started, where we originated, in order to start our own home and our own family. Leaving something that you’ve always known as your home can be scary and you may not like it but it happens, you will make where you go your new home and soon the old one will just be a memory.
