She had a wild past with many encounters with the local sheriff, and she was well known as “Felony Melanie.” She did not grow up in a very wealthy family, nor did she have a big house. She married her childhood sweetheart Jake Perry, but this relationship quickly became volatile. She moved to New York City, desperate to get out of town and start her own clothing line. Melanie changed her last name, being ashamed of her redneck roots. But all of her lies all begin to fall apart when she is to be married to the Mayor’s son, and she finds out that her presumed ex-husband is actually still her husband. Melanie must return home to resolve this issue, without disclosing information about her home that she is very ashamed of to her fiancée. The audience is also able to relate her experiences with experiences of their own. An audience member will find that, although they might be very different from Melanie, their view of “home” could have several parallels with hers. Each person has things in their past that they are ashamed of, and this movie helps people to accept those things and be proud of their past. As the viewer watches Melanie’s view of “home” change, as on outsider, they can see how it could better themselves to do the same.
