Georgetown Cupcake was founded on February 14th, 2008, almost at the beginning of the economic crises. Two sisters who left their glamorous corporate jobs to go after their own passion-- Sophie and Katherine, run the store. The sisters are only a year apart and were raised in Toronto. Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne pursued a Bachelors of Arts degree in Molecular Biology from Princeton University. Katherine Kallinis Berman received a Bachelors of Arts in Politics from Marymount University in VA. What turned this small sweets shop in DC into one of the nation’s most famous bakeries in under a decade? Follow along for an inside scoop from one of the DC sisters: Katherine Kallinis.

The sisters started small because they did not expect a dramatic inflow of customers and orders. They originally planned to sell 500 cupcakes on their first day, but ended up selling over a thousand. This unexpected demand rendered their business plan obsolete. However, being flexible and adaptable worked in their favor and they quickly accepted the change and tweaked their business plan. As an entrepreneur you need to be prepared to throw your old business plan (or parts of it) out of the window and make the necessary changes. The best entrepreneurs accept changes and adapt to grasp the opportunity. Katherine: “Sophie sometimes wishes that we had known in advance where to open shop and how many customers to expect. Sprinkles was established in 2005 and founded by Candace Nelson. It has since expanded to Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Georgetown, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Newport Beach, New York, and Palo Alto. Katherine replied stating that when they started Georgetown cupcakes it was based more on their dreams and the idea of running a bakery as a family instead of running or competing in a business. The sisters advise to focus on what you are doing and doing it best. If you are providing your best product and customer service to everyone who walks in through your door, you do not need to be afraid of a little competition. At the same time, you have to be smart and innovative. They have increased their cupcake line from 15 flavors to over a 100 customizable flavors and not many can beat
