It was a hard-knock life for English Settlers in Jamestown. 104 English settlers arrived at Jamestown in the spring of 1607. Only 90 were left in the spring of 1610. Throughout those brutal years, settlers fought off indians, disease, and brackish water and drought.…

Great Britain’s imperial ambitions resulted in a series of military conflicts with its European neighbors that spread to the North American colonies. Unable to avoid warfare, some colonists developed strategic alliances with Native Americans. The willingness had less to do with the friendly feelings toward the Americans and more with their recognition of the colonists growing power on the continent. Many of the English colonists were more than happy to engage in warfare with the unfamiliar and “dangerous savages.” Captain Lovewell’s account in the Ballad of Pigwacket shows this willingness to fight with the Native Americans.…
A Separate Peace Have you ever read a book that showed true friendship throughout the whole book? In this essay I will be writing about how true friendship is shown in the book. A friend is considered to be person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection and a state of trust and support between each other. In A Separate Peace, there are two characters in this book which are Gene and Phineas that have a great bond with each other which is considered to be friendship.…
Cicero: Laulius de Amictia “On Friendship” In present time, a friendship is often known to be a valuable thing in life, a friend is a gift that is cherished for those who have good friendships. In previous decades though what did friendship mean and was it valued the way friendship is presently.…
In this essay, I will compare and contrast Cocking and Kennett’s view with Thomas’s highly moralized view about the nature and value of friendships. Friendship is an important aspect to human life, and many philosophers attempt to understand it to its fullest. To compare the differing views of Cocking and Kennett to Thomas’s Highly moralized view, I will examine why each party believes that friendship is valuable, as well as discuss how morality is related to friendship. I will also determine which belief seems to be the most plausible of the two, and why.…
In the story"Breaking Through Uncertainty-Welcoming Adversity" by Jim McCormick and "Neighbours" by Lien Chao, the main character both learn to face the true and take risks. In the first story , the narrator said people are always question their ability, related to something we have never tried or not succeeded at in the past. The narrator gave an example from his experience which was his first skydive of the day. He face some accident during it---"the horizontal clearly visible above the trailing edge of his canopy.…
In this paper, I am going to conduct a brief ethnography based on the movie, McFarland, USA. Also, I will focus finding some of the most crucial ways that enable youth to make a sincere relationship with their friends regardless of any cultural elements such as languages or different norms. First of all, I would like to consider any difficulties and situations that prohibit youth having a genuine friendship. It is fact that everyone is living the world having their own culture. In other words, when there are two different people groups from dissimilar cultural backgrounds, one group might have different values, perceptions, or perspective than another group.…
Aristotle first addresses the topic of friendship in the first chapter of Book VIII of Nicomachean Ethics by establishing its importance claiming that “it is most necessary for our life. For no one would choose to live without friends” (119). Having discussed virtues in the previous chapter, Aristotle links his definition of friendship to the latter topic claiming that friendship is the act of loving by bonding through mutual respect and virtue. Aristotle proves his argument on the nature and purpose of friendship by discussing the different types of friendships, equality in friendship and the relationship between how we love ourselves and how we love others in friendship. Aristotle defines friendship through Chapter VIII and IX as the…
In Daniel Quinn’s book, Ishmael, there are plenty of themes that we could point out. Although, the theme that sticks out to me is the theme of war. War can be defined as an sustained effort to deal with or end a particular undesirable situation or condition. The causes of a war beginning are often numerous and there can be multiple reasons for a war. War can be started for economic gain or to gain more territory.…

The Colonists and Native Americans The relationship between the Colonists and Native Americans was a rocky one to say the least. Often times the focus of American history revolves around the war for independence and the beginning of the American government, but in reality American history began much sooner. Native Americans and early Colonists had once hoped to work together and mutually benefit one another, one can clearly see that this did not work. History shows us how and if violence could have been avoided, what the main causes of conflict were, and which party appeared to be most at fault. One thought provoking question that could be asked is whether violence could have been avoided, or if it was imminent.…
Friendship is an integral part of who we are as human beings, and ancient Greek philosophers attempted to understand why we need or want friendships. The basic ideas we have of friendship are based on the ideas that have been implemented by philosophers like Plato and Aristotle. However, some of these same ideas have been misinterpreted into modern culture. Even the ideas Plato and Aristotle discussed were not fulling practiced in truth. This essay will discuss the idea of friendship according to both Plato and Aristotle focusing on friendships impact on the Psyche, discussing the similarities and differences between the two philosophers, and how these have affected modern society’s idea of friendship.…
The question as to whether a man and a woman can just be friends is one that has been debated for many years. The question may be answered depending on when you were born and what the culture of friendship and dating were at the time. There have been many studies linked to friendship, including opposite-sex and same-sex friendship as described in the article, by April L. Bleske and David M. Buss, titled: Can men and women be just friends? This article discusses the methodology of two studies performed to test evolution-based hypotheses and their outcomes. Friendships in general can provide benefits to both parties as well as inflict costs.…
Roloff, presents a series of norms in the Social Exchange Theory, and there are four that we adhere to. First, the norms of reciprocity, which dictates whether resources must be exactly the same or just similar. Norms of reciprocity “refer to how the initiation of giving resources starts. People may initiate a relationship and give resources without any expectation of return” (Heath and Bryant, 2000, p. 232). For instance, when we first became friends, I would lend Jeremy VHS tapes and he would lend some to me in return.…
