Two Most Significant Environmental Problems In The World

Improved Essays
The question asked is, “what are the two most significant environmental problems in the World?” Well the answer to that question is what you make it. While there are some problems that are more pressing than others, most are about equal and it is a matter of your mere opinion. When I researched, “the most significant environmental problem,” hundreds of sights popped up, each listing a different issue as the most significant problem. So, I took matters into my own hands and I have formed my own opinion. After looking at several articles, I feel that waste disposal and climate change are the two most significant environmental problems in the world, as of right now. Every day, new problems arise, causing the most significant problems to shift order. There are many things that go into what makes waste disposal a significant problem. …show more content…
The brunt of the issue though, is the fact that we, humans, use way too many resources, without recycling. America is a country that lives and thrives off of all things plastic. We have plastic plates, plastic containers, plastic cups, plastic phone cases, etc.. When we go to the grocery store, we come home with at least ten plastic bags, that unless we reuse them as trash bags, we throw away. With the rise in, all things plastic, we have also seen more things being made smaller. While, this might seem like a good idea, there is far less waste from just one two-liter bottle, than there is from eight twelve ounce bottles. We, as a people, like the smaller items. These items are more convenient, but they make for more waste. The well developed countries, such as America, have a huge problem with dumping copious amounts of waste into oceans. While, dumping trash into the bottom of a huge ocean, in the absolute middle, where people never go might sound like a good idea, it is very detrimental to the animals that live there. I know I have seen several instances where a turtle has gotten his head stuck in the plastic rings off of a six pack of drinks. I have also recently seen a turtle that had a plastic straw lodged up its nose. These poor sea turtles should never have to worry about plastic soda rings floating around in the ocean, or straws either for that matter. So, now you ask the question, “What solutions can you offer to counter this problem?” My first response is very quite simple, use less. Less is more. There is no reason that we should be using so much plastic. Not only is the over use of plastic creating a shortage in the resources required to produce it, it is also creating an abundance of waste. There are so many ways I can think of to reduce the use of plastic. The first is by purchasing and bringing the cloth grocery bags with you when you get groceries. The cloth bags are much stronger and bigger in size. By being stronger, they are able to carry more and they are reusable. Another way to help cut down on the amount of waste is to recycle. It is so easy to recycle. Many cities provide recycling bins and will even pick them up for you. When you recycle your plastic bottle, you are allowing that bottle to be broken down and made into another new

The Surfrider Foundation creatively exemplifies what human pollution and carelessness is resulting in such as creating compelling ads like “Fossil, Bag”. Trash islands, which is a result from human pollution, clutters the oceans as well as contaminates marine biology with plastic and plastic components. Unfortunately, humans will continue to contribute to the trash islands and the marine life epidemic by throwing their plastic products out the window and onto the ground as they live their irresponsible lives. The vicious cycle of human carelessness is resulting into the consumption of their very own trash: plastic bags and plastic products. The more that plastic is produced and dumped into the ocean, the more prevalent plastic really is within human daily life, as well as inside…

Marcus Eriksen and his colleagues explain in a 2014 article Plastic Pollution in the World 's Oceans, that there is an estimate of 5.25 trillion plastic particles weighing about 269,000 tons are floating in the world 's oceans. Also, according to Renee Cho in the 2011 article Our Oceans: A Plastic Soup, Cho states that an average amount of time for a plastic water bottle to decompose is around 450 years . Those fishes and other marine animals will be around the plastic waste for years before it decays or when someone removes it from the ocean. Surfrider and Rise above Plastic states that they strive for the best so that each and every sea creature can have a safe environment to live in and the way for that to be accomplished are to have decreased the amount of plastic in the…

Title goes here Waste has, undoubtedly, a very big impact on the current Global Warming phenomenon. Many political figures and environmental activists have called for a change in our habits as consumers to reduce the amount of waste that we produce. However, can we as individuals have a significant impact on the overall waste reduction? Or does this task belong to the large corporations and politicians that really have the power to make a difference? In the essays “Forget Shorter Showers” by Derrick Jensen and “Waste Not, Want Not” by Bill Mckibbens, both authors address the impact of waste reduction as part of the solution to the problem.…

We are using enormous amount of plastic daily. In fact, we feel that plastic is surrounding us. It becomes indispensable for us (Madren 1). Because it is durable and indestructible and has a low density, it starts to accumulate in huge amounts in our oceans, and moves for hundreds of miles away from the original site of pollution and concentrates in five known ocean gyres (Sun). The situation is really very serious now, because thousands of tons of plastics are polluting our oceans and environment, endangering the whole marine life and ecosystems as well as our own heath Plastics exert its harmful and toxic effect on the marine wildlife as a result of ingesting the plastics, also from leaching of plastic toxins, and from getting entangled in…

With light weight, plastic bags can easily be moved a great distance by wind or water flow. They are trapped in trees, fences, or float in water, and increasingly causing the garbage patch to get bigger in the ocean. These are harmful to wildlife and marine life because some animals mistake the plastic bags for food and consume them. There are some cases animals become entangled inside the plastic bags, which leads to the death of these creatures. Moreover, this also indirectly has an adverse effect on human health because of the food web.…
