Women one-hundred years ago vs. Women today
Were women one-hundred years ago different from women today? Women one-hundred years ago had many differences from the women of today’s society. Differences ranging from women’s right, power and abilities, to fashion styles. Women’s morals, marriages and ways transportation, and communication are also major differences from the world of women today.
The most common and main difference brought to today’s attention would be women’s style, but it would not be said as the most important. Liberation is easily, the most important contrast to women today. Liberation is considered free from limits on thought and behavior. “They now have the right to follow their dreams, speak in meetings, seminars, hold careers and even have the choice of staying at home to raise a family or working outside the home for what they want” (reComparison 1). Women today are able to do all. In 1920, women were given the right to vote and even run for President. Women today vote, run for any chair they want, rather it be in the Senate, House of Representatives or even small things like county councils, or become members of any club. Women today have the power and every ability to stand up for themselves and fight for their freedom and own rights. Style of women one-hundred years ago was totally different from the style of women today. Many clothes were homemade dresses, and pants were rarely worn. Most women wore dresses to their ankles, and used umbrellas for their fashion statement. Undergarments were still commonly worn, but were pantaloons and corsets. Shoes were mainly heels that were normally an inch or an inch and a half. Women today are not as covered as women were back one-hundred years ago, but can still be judged for their choice of clothing. Today, there is no specific dress code for everyday life, and it shows the difference between women’s personalities, and class. Some women where higher end, name brand clothing, and some women can only afford used clothes, or lower ended clothes. This sometimes brings problems into the self-esteem of women, like morals and abilities do and afford things. The morals of women one-hundred years seem to be for the better in some ways. …show more content…
Self-esteem seems to be a similar problem in both todays women and women one-hundred years ago. Although, women were not able to do things on their own, and had to depend on others for everything, and women today are able to do those things, self-esteem is still low. Women one-hundred years ago had to depend on their husbands for money and were more than likely stuck at home being house wives and taking care of children, which lowered their self-esteem. Women one-hundred years ago were strongly judged just because they were women. Women still get judged for many actions today, but are able to work in public places, like factories, restaurants, and etc. One-hundred years ago, marriages were a one-time thing. You didn’t see much of the splitting up and getting back together or splitting up in general. Nowadays, divorces happen more often. Women don’t have the same respect for their significant others or their own selves as much as they should or used to. Also, same sex marriages were highly uncommon. If same sex relationships happened one-hundred years ago, they were either …show more content…
You don’t see many women walking, or riding in carriages nowadays unless you are in the Amish communities. Many times in today’s society carriages are used for tours of historic cities, like Charleston, South Carolina for example. When you see women walking today they are either exercising, or showing poverty. Although those are not the official reasons, they are only possibilities. Which can possibly be what women did one-hundred years ago but it was not the common reason. Transportation today is normally a lot faster than what women were used to awhile back. Most women are able to afford cars, motorcycles, mopeds, bikes, or any other way of transportation. You don’t see many train transportations either, unless it’s in big cities like New York, but those are upgraded inventions called
