Wayne Dyer once said that “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” This was a key concept in Viktor E. Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning. Frankl had to see many horrible things while he was a Nazi prisoner, but by changing his mindset and the way he looked at things, he was able to overcome all of the hardships that were thrown at him and lived to tell his incredible story. Like Frankl, we as Honor’s Students are about to experience a world of difference. Sometimes it will be rewarding, and other times it will be challenging. By changing the way we look at things and by reflecting on Frankl’s lessons, we will be able to succeed and make the most out of our time at CMU.

During the beginning of my sophomore year of high school, I was doubting whether or not my life had a purpose. I was depressed and sad all the time and wish I would have been able to learn from Frankl at that point. However, I made it out of the rut and began to focus on myself. I made school a priority and worked hard to keep up my grades. I even dual enrolled at Saginaw Valley State University during the first semester of my senior year. By focusing on myself and school, I was able to graduate as Salutatorian of my graduating class and go on to receive the Centralis Gold Scholarship. I have never doubted my purpose …show more content…
I am now getting the incredible opportunity to take classes tuition free so that I can become a professional within the medical field and begin helping others. After reading Frankl’s book, I now realize that there are so many things I can do to care for others. I have already participated in many community service projects during my time in high school, but hope to continue making a difference as an Honors student. There will always be people who need help, and while I can’t change the world over night, I can make it a better place than it was yesterday. There will always be a way to find something that gives my life

A series of small waves pressed the sail boat against the alge dock as his cold and cracked hands desperately yanked on the rope in an effort to raise the sails. Dark clouds had moved in the night before and had stayed overnight providing a refreshing sprinkle of rain every now and then. He looked out over the vast plain of unsettled water and saw one individual white cap rise up among the rest only to be pushed back down. Due to the lack of sunlight the frigid water appeared black and lifeless but he knew that below it was a complex community of different species. He then bent over the side of the boat and reached for its securing ropes.…

Like the quiet before the storm, there was another nigh-complete silence, a well-needed respite after the deafening gunfire they had been subjected to; then, the thunderous sound started up again, the crack of Daniel Stoll shooting indiscriminately like a madman. The gang members, surging through this unreliable curtain of bullets, did not pursue their entourage, instead slamming the door shut with a tremendous clamor. It was a bizarre, ridiculous decision. Had they wanted to escape the wrath of Mr. Stoll and his equalizer, it was entirely possible to simply not walk towards the doorway! Instead they pressed forward into a place with no cover to merely shut a door.…
