Writing has changed my perspective on various aspects of my life. Some of the essays that I have written in the past have opened doors to new ideas. These essays have helped me make connections I feel I never would have made without writing. I believe this is because I enter my deepest level of concentration when I write. This heightened level of concentration I reach when writing has allowed me to reflect on important areas in my life such as self-awareness and motivation.

This essay topic let me realise that self-awareness plays a major role in a person's happiness. Since being aware of my own actions allows me to get a glimpse of how others view me, self-awareness plays a useful part in my everyday interactions. As a result of the essay I wrote in highschool, I have become inspired by the topic of self awareness and have made it a goal to become a more self-aware individual. The process of brainstorming for this essay let me realise that I was not where I wanted to be mentally. Jed opened the front door of the 12Bar and gazed outside. Dark brown river water quietly and urgently filled the streets around the bar, tuning it into its own private island. The view reminded him of the “big flood” from eight years ago. That flood had devastated most of the area, but somehow had left the 12Bar intact. When Jed purchased the bar six months ago, the former owners assured him saying, “…that was a five-hundred year flood, it will never happen again in your lifetime.”…

When it comes to understanding yourself and your personality on a deeper level than normally, you must take personal stories into perspective that have shaped your life while growing up. According to McAdams, “defining oneself through a personal story is an act of psychological and social responsibility” (Engler 2009). Psychological and social responsibility relate to how you act onto actions around you and how you tie society into your viewpoint of the world. In other words, explaining yourself through a story can show several things such as how your emotions played an affect, the type of response you displayed to something that happened, and as well as the lessons you learned through a personal but also social aspect. In addition, McAdams…
