Venus Personal Statement

My mother gave birth to me as she looked at the planet Venus, she said my birth was easy and I came into this world as the only girl she would ever have. Growing up with five brothers was anything but easy, it was a constant challenge of trying to prove my worth. There was no one to turn to or relate to and my mom worked all day, so I spent most of my childhood independently, never really relying on anyone but myself. By the 6th grade, my competitive spirit and independence translated to mathematics. I felt a great sensation every time it was announced that I got the highest score on the math test. I chased this feeling and strived to be the greatest in all subjects of study. I realized that it was more about my own curiosity and love of knowledge that helped me to persevere rather than the desire to be the best. I will literally reach for the stars as I strive, in my life, to become the next astrophysicist. It was obvious to me that my life was made to explore the universe, considering my coorelation to Venus at birth. All those times I felt alone in life, or that I needed to be reassured, I looked towards the sky. During the day, I would see a saturated blue covered with puffy white clouds, and at night I would be surrounded by the blanket of stars and planets that made me feel as though I was not alone. Ironic isn’t it, that by staring into a void of infinite space, I felt as though I was more connected. I felt as though the planets were my family and all the stars were my friends. How could I ever be alone with billions of friends watching over

Tenacity. One could certainly use this space for the typical Merriam-Webster definition, yet it is the way in which I define tenacity that causes it to be my favorite word and it resonates so well with me. I believe that tenacity is the ability to continue relentlessly towards the pursuit of a goal when trials and tribulations arise, while still retaining one's character and preexisting moral values, and there's no other personality trait that defines me more than tenacity. I've never been the most intellectual student in class. I've never been the most talented athlete in the arena, and I've most certainly never been the highest achieving member of my school or family.…

In 2014 it was recorded, at familystudies.org, that 45% of children in the U.S grew up in a single-parent household, and as many as 650, 000 children grow up with foster parents. I conducted my own research with friends who grew up with divorced parents and spoke with children who grew up with foster parents to understand their perspective on life and who they perceive as influential people in their lives.
