Reading comprehension is just one component of the act of reading that is comprised of two primary components: vocabulary knowledge and text comprehension. Understanding when reading comprehension begins occurs prior to the mastery of reading. This continuum practice is developed through components that consider a child’s level of development, and individual knowledge without sequence. With every strategy are sub- categories that is strongly encourage not be taught in isolation but taught over a period of time by teachers and parents. “Reading comprehension is incredibly complex and multifaceted”(Reading Institute Resources).

This awareness of one’s own abilities and cognitive process are used to develop a learner’s own strategies and locus of control. This is not an automatic process of thought. However, through effective teaching practices teachers, can deepen metacognitive practices in their students and a students develop strategies by teaching students to plan, monitor and evaluating their own thinking. Students that use planning strategies learn how to make predictions by studying illustrations, and skimming for boldface, and headings and reading the topic. Furthermore, comprehension is continued through how a text is organized. Monitoring strategies include rereading a text for specific clues that leads to further understanding and retentions. A print rich environment that utilize these three tiers students develop their everyday language to a more mature lexicon and generalize this information specific classes such as mathematics and science. Developing vocabulary through the use of graphic organizers help with learning and retention.
Graphic organizers that build reading comprehension is a skilled that can be generalized and lend its self cross-categorically. The more obvious uses of a graphic is organizers it that it provides a tangible visual representations to organize more abstract thinking. This formative assessment provides teachers and students the strengths and weakness a learner has. Successful graphic organizers help students are able to make connections from prior knowledge. The Institute of Education Science (IES) provides five specific recommendations that are evidence-based research to help teachers identify struggling readers for improving reading comprehension for student’s kindergarten through third grade. These recommendations are multi-tiered that can be adjusted that monitors a students’ progress. Nonetheless, of the five recommendations the first three focuses aligns itself best with critical needs discussed in this review. A quick review of the Recommendations
