Taking Sides Paper Laura Stapley Brigham Young University SFL 210, Section 003 Taking Sides: Divorce The world today is filled with so much information, opinions and controversy on endless issues and subjects that it is difficult to differentiate between what is accurate and what is contrived. Therefore, it is important to be able to decipher a credible source of information from a lacking one, especially in published articles. An article written in 1996 by Karl Zinsmeister discusses research conducted on the impact divorce has on children. The article, while thought provoking, has many weaknesses and flaws in its credibility.…
The article, “The effects of divorce on America”, written by Patrick Fagan and Robert Rector explains how divorce is not only hurting society but children. This article expresses the effects divorce has on a child’s life including educational ability, job stability, and emotional health. When children go through a divorce they are sometime left in the turmoil and are forced to make very difficult decisions which adds stress to the traumatizing experience. The authors said most of the emotional and psychological damage is due to the degenerating relationships with the two parents, or when one child and a parent. Upon reading this article I realized divorce not only effects the family involved but also future generations.…
My topic of study that I am researching is how parents’ divorce/separation affects adolescents’ development. As we all know, divorce hurts emotionally. Despite the pain side of emotionally going through divorce, there is also many other sides as well. The next part of my literature is the current research section. In this section I noted published research about my topic.…
Divorce introduces major changes within a family dynamic no matter what the age of the individuals involved. Divorce carries out heartbreak, pain, and confusion. Children are extremely susceptible to the pain and confusion that accompanies the divorce of their parents. Children witness the loss of love between parents, undergo the adjustment of two different households, and experience the daily absence of one parent while living with the other, all of which create a challenging new family dynamic. Various responses occur due to this stressful change among childhood, school age and adolescent children.…
Many people argue that children of divorce show no noticeable signs of traumatic influence. They say that children can actually benefit from divorce and that children are happier when they get away from the stress of an unhealthy relationship. However, it has been proven time after time that children who have endured parental divorce suffer from extensive emotional trauma and guilt. Studies have shown that “No matter how civilised a divorce is, it always makes children unhappy” (Allison). Children oftentimes feel as if the divorce and its effects on the family are their fault.…
“The article Consequences of Parental Divorce for Child Development by Hyun Sik Kim explores a three-stage model and the effects of divorce during childhood development. He examines a pre-divorce period, in-divorce and post-divorce period.” (Kim, 2015) In a pre-divorce period, it is possible that a child would experience an adverse effect on them and this could or would result in inflated risk and development during and after a marriage conflict. With extreme spousal conflicts before divorce this can have its effects on children.…
It has been seen in past research that children with divorced parents suffer depression, failing at school, and even turned into criminals, but recent studies show that these children were dealing with these issues before the divorce. “Children 's psychological reactions to their parents ' divorce vary in degree dependent on three factors: (1) the quality of their relationship with each of their parents before the separation, (2) the intensity and duration of the parental conflict, and (3) the parents ' ability to focus on the needs of children in their divorce.” The article also talks about how children who are kept in touch with both their parents have a better opportunity to be more balanced and more realistic, and throughout the years children adapt to the divorce terms and find easy to make this positive. The effect on women is more economical, seeing as women initiate divorce twice as often as men, in fact after the divorce most women find peace and adjust better than men do. Economically, divorce takes a toll on women since 65% of women don’t get paid for child support and that 60% of people under the poverty line are divorced women and children.…
Cierra Follett Autobiography Sophomore Honors English As a child, I lived a near-ideal life. I was the youngest among my brother and a sister, my parents were together, we had a nice house in the small town of Snohomish with acreage, and a family dog was always around. I was raised by Christians and was expected to live by these standards. Until the summer of 2014, the most that I had to worry about was how I would tease my older sister that day.…
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, “Perhaps nowhere has this change been more palpable than in the United States, where anywhere from 40 to 50 percent of Americans will experience divorce in their lifetime (qtd. in Analyzing Divorce From Cultural and Network Approaches). As one can see, 40 to 50 percent is just about half of the United States population. The question is, how does our nation decrease the percent of Americans who will end up in a divorce sometime in their life? Divorce is more common in today’s society than ever before.…
The study of the society is looking at sociology in its broadest sense. It examines human behavior and how interaction with each other is shaped by social structures. These structures are sometimes not obvious or visible but are present and shape most dimensions of the human experience in society. Social class is a prime example of social structure and it conforms to the interactions that people have with each other. My task is to analyze the three main theoretic perspectives with a view of the ‘rising divorce rate’.…

Children of divorce experience a disruption in the parental relationship during and after a divorce. Hoffman (1996) found that children of divorce have impaired relationships with their parents both immediately following the divorce and for some time after. In some cases, children of divorce might experience a devastating loss of a relationship with a parent 12 entirely (Harvey, 2004). These major life changes from the child’s previous norm within the parental structure can have a lasting traumatic effect on the child’s life and can influence their perception of…

The term divorce means that a couple who were in love married and then want to be legally unbound from their partner for some specific reason.
