The Pros And Cons Of The Current American Grading System

Someone once said that if they ran a school, they would give the average grades to the students who gave all the right answers for being good parrots but they would give the top grades to those who made a lot of mistakes and talked about them, and then discussed what they learned from them. This quote is the polar opposite of the current American grading system. The students who end up getting the top grades are those who give to right answers without learning any of the material. They repeat the answer like a "good parrot" and don't end up absorbing the information. However, the ones who end up getting the lower grades are those who make mistakes and learn from them. However, in other countries like the Netherlands, the grades given to the student reflects their ability to learn and how hard they attempt the task. The Netherlands have one of the best education systems in the world, ranking 3rd, while the United States have one of the worst education systems, ranking 17th in the world. In the Netherlands, they have a very different grading system than the United States. They use a ranking system that ranks the students from one to ten, with one being the lowest and ten being the highest. If students succeed and try their hardest, the average score they receive is a 6 or a 7. A 9 or 10 score is very rare and similarly, a 1-4 score is rarely given. If the grading scale of the Netherlands is compared to the American grading scale, most students would be getting C's on their assignments. But, colleges and universities in the Netherlands don't look at the grades the student got in high school; rather, they look at the classes they took and whether they challenged themselves …show more content…
