In the book “Freakonomics” the authors Levitt and Dubner discuss Real-Estate and how agents benefit more than the client. The real-estate topic provides more convincing evidence that people are only inspired to do things based on incentives. The authors work to prove that realtors are self-motivated people, and are not actually helping people. Real-estate agents are professionals with more information than the client. Henry Demarest Lloyd argues that the operations of monopolies are detrimental to the people. Lloyd explains that a monopoly is used to control aspects of the business, which generates a profit for a select few. Business owners are legally allowed to reduce production and increase prices in order to sustain a high demand for their product. Ultimately so businesses get the most and give the least. Why does Mr. Steven Levitt and Stephen Dunbner not like realtors? In a book filled with so many interesting questions, this would be the one I would ask the authors directly. This book by economist Steven D. Levitt, co-authored with Stephen J. Dubner, fuses together stories, anecdotes, data analyses, and discussions of unusually linked phenomena as it ask its readers to think more critically about the things that occur in everyday life. Things like how birth control has stemmed the crime rate, or how being named Shithead will decrease your job prospects, and ever so important, why you are being cheated by your real-estate agent. Gentrification can be defined as the process of dramatic change and remodel of urban areas accompanied by the influx of white middle-class or white affluent people who ransack the rich history and spirit of neighborhoods. This in turn displaces longtime residents and business owners of color in favor of over-priced homes, eateries, and other establishments that are homogenous to whiteness, while renaming the area. Additionally, there is a legacy of rent hikes and the establishment of high property values utilized as a tool to keep former residents of color out.
