As they were previously mentioned, they are called neurons. Neurons are cells that receive and impart messages for the body to react (“Brain Basics”). They connect to each other and all parts of the the body. When humans are hungry, have bathroom needs, feel too hot or too cold, nauseous, or are experiencing pain, the nervous system begins sending messages to the brain in order for the body to react in order to get what it needs to be normal again (“Kang, Week 1 Nervous System”). This relates to the maintenance of homeostasis; reaction time is important for the human body because in an emergency situation the body has to react fast to save it’s life. For instance, if someone is driving a car and is coming to a stop sign with pedestrians waiting to cross, the driver has react quickly to press the brakes. If the brakes aren’t pressed an accident can happen because pedestrians are expecting the driver to stop or furthermore, at the intersection, the driver can crash with other cars. There are two essential types of reaction times. There is simple reaction time which means an individual only has one option to respond to. If there is a race and the gunshot is what initiates the race, the only option here is to run. Choice reaction time is when there is one stimulus, but different responses. For example, if there is an online game of killing ladybugs and 7, 8, 9 kills the bad bugs, but a, b, c kills the good …show more content…
There are things, however, that can affect reaction time like people smoking, drinking caffeine, medication and age. Caffeine is a stimulant of the brain that is usually found in coffee plants. People drink caffeine to initiate their day or get energy in their system. Things that contain caffeine are sodas, red bull (Energy Drinks) and coffee. Caffeine stimulates the adrenal glands which is in charge of the hormone that is the fight or flight hormone. This hormone helps the body decide to withstand an attack, harmful or scary situation or leave it in order to survive ("What Does Caffeine Do to Cause the Reaction Time to Increase?"). Caffeine usually creates an increase in how alert someone is and makes them react faster. Another factor that could affect reaction time is smoking cigarettes and marijuana. Smoking arouses a person giving them a feeling of relief or relaxation. Studies show that this can most certainly delay the concentration of a person who 's being tested for reaction time (Bombay). Medication affects reaction time as well. Students who take medication in the morning are more likely to be concentrated on what they do depending on the medication since there are so many types. It may also affect reaction time negatively or as being more slow, but again it depends on the medicine. The reason behind this is because they usually take medication
