This is accomplished by the client’s need to resolve frustration of unsettled feelings from incongruences in their lives (Henderson & Thompson, 2011). The counseling process continues with the counselor being genuine, accepting, and empathetic in order to help the client self-examine, understand where they are and where they would like to be, and act towards a goal (Henderson & Thompson,…
Introduction Throughout this course, this writer has been challenged to practice counseling skills on either herself or volunteers to get use to the practice and implementing various techniques. This writer has gained additional awareness into what the counseling relationship looks like as well as how to challenge the client, problem solve, collect and reframe the story, identify possibilities, set goals, implement a plan, and ultimately lead the client to termination and maintenance. This paper is a reflection of what she has learned throughout this course. Skills and Strengths…
John is a mandated client which means that he is required to meet with me against his will. I will need to be understanding and supportive of his situation, acknowledging that this is a difficult situation for all. It would be a challenge to motivate John into becoming actively engaged in treatment but it’s the responsibility of the John, myself and the system of care.…

This will be the time to establish a good rapport that will enable the counselor and the client to get to know and understand one another. Building a positive working relationship in the initial interview will assist in putting the client at ease. This will enable the client to feel more comfortable sharing their experiences with the counselor. With the establishment of openness the counselor and the client can begin the process of discussing vocational goals and investigating the assessments that might be necessary.…
A counselor who expresses different opinions from those expressed by a client can make a client feel unaccepted and unwilling to discuss the issues further, hindering effective counseling process. NAADAC Code of Ethics (2016) the counseling relations standard addresses the client welfare. According to this specification, it is important that a counselor understands that the ability to do good is based upon the underlying concern for another ersonon’s wellbeing. In such a case, the counselor acts for the good of others, exercising respect, sensitivity, and insight (Young, Scott, Craig, and Cashwell, 2016).…

The therapist begins listening for spontaneous descriptions by asking questions. They listen to find exceptions to help the clients to enact preferred solutions to their life (page 337). The questions will encourage the client to consider new possibilities that have been formed. Questions in Narrative Therapy are designed as “inner talk” in working with the client about the problem. The therapist asked the client to organize the problem, and ask questions to attempt to dissolve the problem (page 386).…
My assumptions on human nature are that everyone is born with a clean slate. I think it is the society they grow up in that shapes them into what they grow up to be. But, if someone is brought up in a violent household, town, country, or even community, they are more likely to be the self-centered violent members of society. If all members of a society had a common goal and worked hard to reach self-actualization, they would much happier, which would cause less conflict. In order to achieve self-actualization, you must work hard, strive for greatness, and do what makes you happy regardless of what that might be.…
An exercise in class allowed me to understand my own reasoning for helping others as well as what may be my own selfish reasons for seeking this profession. For example, at one point in the exercise, I broke ground into my own self-assessment and found insight that I was partially seeking the profession for money and for my savior complex. I felt that this observation of myself showed that I was overall, functioning normally with both healthy and minimal unhealthy motivations. Another concern that came across my mind is when I have a…
The hardest thing about this session was that the client was a classmate. When she was sharing information about her family and her relationship I wanted her to feel that it was a safe environment, but I understood how hard that would be while knowing our class would view the session. She was open and honest and I was grateful for that but I feel that she had more to share about the situation. I felt that it was hard being 23 with overbearing parents but you can see her love for her parents as she talks.…
Goal I The first goal of the program was to “Apply major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology to prepare for graduate study or careers in which psychological training is relevant”(). Two classes met this goal, Introduction to Psychology (PSY 111) taken at Anne Arundel Community College, and Introduction to Counseling Psychology (PSYC 432) taken at the University of Maryland University College. Introduction to Psychology was the first psychology course I took many years ago. It was the class I took because I had an empty slot on my schedule.…
While managing to present the client with certain challenges that allow them to see the action that needs to be taken, and what can they do in order to bring about change. It is also very necessary to help the clients pinpoint their own personal strengths, understand what’s hindering them from using available resources, and to have them specifically state what they want they want in life and how they want to live it. Professional boundaries/roles on the therapist behalf is to be explicitly stated before the therapy is in session. Maybe also a little clarification of the rules of therapy and what therapy is exactly since individuals tend to have misconstrued information about therapy in general. Some important characteristics that a good counselor should have is the willingness to listen, to provide encouragement, to be empathetic, to be nonjudgmental, to have patience, and to most of all uphold the promise to keep things confidential unless that client is at risk for harming themselves as well as others.…
Some of the proposals that I made to my client included whether he had considered seeing a professional counselor regarding the situation he and his family were going through. I would give him time to reflect in the idea after which he would express what he thought about the different issues I asked…
Journal Reflection Who we are personally and professional are entwined together. Our personal life impacts our professional life and vice versa.
