In my discussion part I am going to talk about my point of view on whether or not teenagers should or should not be forced to participate in sports. After I have talked about my point of view I will mention the arguments and counter arguments which will show peoples point of view on whether teenagers should be forced to participate in sport or not. But firstly I am going to state a quote from a newspaper and a quote from another source stating why teenagers should be forced to participate in sports. A quote from The Telegraph states that “forcing children to exercise more does not make them thinner”. (Smith, 2012). This argument is a quote against the idea of forcing teenagers to participate in sports in order to tackle the problem of obesity and overweight teenagers. A quote from a different source said “I think that all high school students should be required to participate in a team sport. Teams create a safe and welcoming environment for their athletes. Students who are normally outsiders would feel included because they are part of a team”. (emcphillips, 2011). This counter argument is a quote for the idea of forcing teenagers to participate in sport. Both of these quotes show that there are a variety of arguments for and against the idea of forcing teenagers to participate in sports. My point of view is that every single teenager in the UK should be forced to participate in sports in some kind of way. I have three good solid reasons for why I think that teenagers should be forced to participate in sport. Argument 1: The first reason is because when people do not take part in physical activity it increases the amount of people which are obese in the UK. …show more content…
People who are overweight often suffer from self-esteem problems and this is because they don’t feel good about the way they look and perform. So this is why staying healthy is an ad-vantage because you have good self-esteem and mental health. Having good self-esteem in sport is also an advantage because you feel more confident about yourself and you perform better. There are many possible consequences of not participating in sport and of being obese and these are; type 2 diabetes, asthma, obstruc-tive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular risk factors, psychosocial risks/mental health disorders and musculoskeletal problems. Each one of these illnesses I took out of my research review. (Health risks of childhood obesity, n.d.). The reason this is happening is because teenagers are often playing computer games in their spare time, eating a lot of rubbish and leaving out the important meals such as your breakfast, dinner and tea; with no exercise being completed throughout the day. A quote to back my research up is “Researchers found that teenage boys consumed an extra 80 calories after playing computer games for an hour compared to those who did not”. (Borland, 2011). That 80 calories could make a difference because if you play on a computer game for 3 hours every day you are putting on 240 calories more than the people who are not playing com-puter games. This is also a big problem because once the people who put that 240 calories on they are unlike-ly to take it off because they do not participate in any kind of physical activity. “Playing video games some of the time can be OK. Just choose quality games and limit screen time which in-cludes TV, computer, smartphone, tablet, and video game time combined to no more than 2 hours a day”. (Mary L Gavin, 2014). If this was to change and there was a rule where a teenager has to perform at least some kind of exercise for one or two hours or they can only play on a game console for 2 hours a day, this then would be great for the population as it would make the UK look a healthier country. The reason why it will make the country a healthy place is because the fatty foods that people eat they will get burned off due to the amount of exercise they would do and the amount of time that they would not be wasted due to slouch-ing about on computer games.
