Dark colors, such as black, are typically used to illustrate danger and death. Jason Dean illustrates both of these characteristics in various ways. An example of this is when Jason intentionally kills Heather with liquid drainer. He then proposes to Veronica that she writes a suicide note in Heather’s handwriting to make it look like Heather took her own life. Another example is when Jason goes to Veronica’s house in the middle of the night. Jason is shown outside of her house checking to see if his gun is loaded giving the audience the impression that he desires to murder her. This promotes the audience to consider Jason Dean as unorthodox and psychotic.
The various forms of lighting create the space of the movie and directs our attention to specific details. An illustration of this is when Jason Dean is creating a bomb to blow up the school. Low key lighting is used to emphasize Jason and the bomb and darken the background so that the audience’s attention is exclusively on what Jason is doing. Another scene in where low key lighting is used is when Veronica has a dream that Jason is going to kill Heather with a knife. The dark setting creates a sense of an eerie and ominous atmosphere.
