A Summary Of Lighting Techniques In Dead Again

Dead Again uses different lighting techniques to create dramatic contrast and a sense of mood in each scene. This is highlighted through the film noir scenes when dramatic high contrast was achieved by using two extremes of lighting, a lack of light and a heavy amount of light. This was especially shown in the opening interrogation scene. During the scene the light in the room was the only light source present and everything else was in complete darkness. In the scene the contrast was so strong that in order to be visible the actor playing Roman Strauss had to lean forward into the light source. This lighting technique is a way of using your eye and forcing it to mimic the reaction your eye has during night. This occurs when your cones are not as active and your rods are being used more. Enabling your eye to not perceive various colors that might have appeared to you if the lighting state was quite different. During the present day scenes cool and warm colour light were used to create a sense of mood. For example, the use of amber light is shown in the hypnotist store. In this scene, while the candles were being lit they were giving off warm coloured amber light. This created a sense of rising action and grabbed the audiences attention. In addition, blue light was also used during many of the scenes. For example, this could be seen through the windows and during the lightning effects. The lightning effect appeared to be created using the technique of strobe in combination with blue lighting to create a naturalistic effect.
