Journal Activity 3.2: Mental Health Legislation in the NWT Similar to other jurisdictions across Canada, the Northwest Territories (NWT) has its own mental health legislation which describes how residents with mental health challenges can be supported. Among other things, the legislation determines how to care for individuals who may require voluntary or involuntary admission to a mental health facility. In the NWT, the mental health legislation has undergone recent public review. By October 2015, Bill 55: Mental Health Act (2015) passed its third reading in the legislature, but news sources stated that it would take approximately a year to come into effect (Thurton, 2015a).…
Mental illness a serious matter in society today. Many people from teenagers to adults suffer from some kind of mental illness. Anxiety and depression are the two most common types of mental illnesses experienced, both ranging from mild to severe. Unfortunately, the people that suffer from these illnesses are not treated with the respect that they should be. People with these illnesses are gaslighted into believing that what they are experiencing and feeling is wrong and that it is their fault, but it’s not.…
The United States of America is considered by most standards to be one of the most powerful, influential, and productive countries in the world, with a population of over three hundred million citizens, and a gross domestic product of almost seventeen and a half trillion dollars (World Bank). Yet beneath the surface of this magnificent nation there lies a tragic truth. The reality is, underneath the glorious lifestyles and towering cities, the United States is sick with a disease that affects nearly twenty percent of its populace (Bekiempis). Mental illness is the general term used to describe this “disease,” which includes a number of mental health disorders, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and posttraumatic stress syndrome to name a few. These disorders can occur due to a multitude of reasons, however there are a specific set of circumstances that often induce and promote mental illness.…
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs reports that there are approximately 22.2 million living veterans. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), substance abuse disorders, depression, and anxiety occur at a higher rate in veterans (Spelman et al., 2012, p. 1200), and every day twenty-two veterans take their own lives. (Department of Veterans Affairs, Kemp, RN PhD, Bossarte, PhD, 2012, p. 15) Sadly, veterans that want mental health treatment cannot get appointments at the V.A., and some who would like treatment do not seek mental health care for a variety of reasons. Without treatment, veterans are at a higher risk of mental health challenges, at risk of family instability, homelessness, and unable to maintain a job (Seal et al., 2009).…
Hello, Rozik. Isn't it startling how many Americans have been diagnosed with a psychological disorder? Now imagine how many have not been diagnosed? One in four Americans would probably turn into one in three Americans, or one in two. What startles me the most is the rise of mental disorders in kids and teenagers.…
Mental illness is a disease that affects an individual’s mood, thought process, and the behavior. Mental illness is a disease that many people have but are never willing to admit or talk about. People need to realize that they have a problem and get it taken care of just like any other problem they have ever had. Most people that are living with a mental illness have a chemical imbalance in their brain which is causing them to have an altered mental state. The stigma associated with mental illness is unhealthy for those who are truly affected by this disease and the public needs to be willing to talk about it.…

Mental health has a direct relationship with an individual 's physical health, and their ability to succeed in school, at work, and in society. Both physical and mental health affect how people think, feel, and act on the inside and outside (Children’s). There are many options available to help the mental health of children, but the help of a single individual could change the life a child forever. Counseling provided in schools not only tends to help the mental health of children but helps their academic outcomes as well (Slaten). Mental health issues are extremely common among school children (Kid’s).…
A person’s mental health can affect their feelings, thoughts, and actions (What 2013). Currently, 19 states have yet to expand Medicaid eligibility and mental health is an important topic of consideration (Current 2017). The first article is titled “The Effects of Medicaid Eligibility on Mental Health Services and Out-of-Pocket Spending for Mental Health Services” (hereinafter referred to as “Article #1”) and that article will be compared and contrasted to the article titled “Medicaid Expansions from 1997 to 2009 Increased Coverage and Improved Access and Mental Health Outcomes for Low-Income Parents” (hereinafter referred to as “Article #2”). I will compare and contrast the articles first by section with an overall analysis at the end.…
I do not believe I am fully prepared/ready to be a mental health counselor yet. I believe even seasoned professionals can always learn from every experience they encounter and can only be ready by practicing/providing direct services to clients. I do believe that this class has taught me a great amount of knowledge about community mental health and all the strengths and weaknesses involved. One important point that I learned about was related to prevention and using "sensitizing proximal agents" to my advantage when I am a licensed clinician. Proximal agents are people in the community who have close and regular contact with members of populations likely to face specific challenges in life (Teed & Schileppi, 2007).…
4. From Mechanics’ perspective the meaning of mental illness is socially constructed in that those that diagnose an individual with mental illness are the primary and secondary groups around us. Mechanic says that in order for a physician to gain commitment from a patient refusing his diagnosed illnesses, the physicians tries to convince the family that the patient is in serious need for treatment, thereby, the physician tries to gain the support from the patient’s family to support his diagnosis of the patient. So, even if the patient refuses to accept the patient role and deny his perceived illness, this resistance is seen as further evidence that the individual is in fact exhibiting further symptoms of mental illness. If the patient fails…
Mental Disorders In the United States about 43 million adults, which is 18.5 percent of the population, struggles with mental health issues in a given year (http://www.nami.org/Learn-More/Mental-Health-By-the-Numbers) . There are many causes of mental illnesses, traumatic brain injury, biological factors or even exposure to toxic chemicals or diseases ("Mental Disorders." MedlinePlus). Approximately twenty percent of America’s population are challenged with mental disorders, ranging from toddlers to teenagers to adults. Mental illnesses respects no gender or age group.…
Mental health is one of the leading causes of health issues globally. One in four people will be affected with at least one mental health disorder during their lifetime. A person can only imagine how costly this must be for a country. This leads them to ask the question: how does mental health affect the economy of countries? In order to answer this inquiry, it is only logical to first explore the global prominence of mental health, how countries are using funding to help with the issue, and then see how the funding affects these countries from an economic aspect.…
I don’t think we are all mentally ill. The people put in asylums are there because they have a chemical imbalance in their brain and can harm themselves or others. However, I do believe anyone who harms themselves or others are mentally ill. On the other hand, if someone likes horror movies, then they might just like the adrenaline that comes with it without them being in danger. Maybe they need something interesting in their lives so they watch horror movies and imagine themselves in those situations.…
Table 4: Laborious Experiences I. Mental illness is not a setback According to APA (American Psychological Association), the brain is the control center of any individual, it is the one responsible for our thinking skills and capabilities, if the brain is not working all of our system will also fail to do their functions, But what if a person has a mental illness does it mean that they couldn’t think properly? Yes, they might act like any person do, but they can actually think the same way that others did. The experience of mental illness was not seen as linear process, but rather as a journey of setbacks, adjustments and learning (American Psychological Association, 2017). With the help and support of the family members, symptoms could be…
