Nevertheless, the most intriguing aspect of the changing American family is the traditional token of “marriage” which is no longer the norm. “The number of married households in the United States have been in a downward trend since the 1970s, when married couples made up 71 percent of all households, to 2014 when less than half of all U.S. households were composed of married couples” (Kendall, Diana. 2015, 2017. p.439). You are finding people who remain single by choice, due not finding the right partner. Some scholars have concluded that the people who prefer to remain single hold more individualistic values are less family oriented than those who choose to marry. (Kendall, Diana. 2015, 2017. P.446). This preference I find to be very intriguing, due to most people wanting to belong and have companionship.
We will take a look how marriage and family life is linked to class, race, gender, and personal choice.
