In his first season, he switched to outfield and became a star. He put his name in the record book by hitting 54 homeruns. The only team that had more homeruns than Ruth was the Philadelphia Phillies. he had his greatest season in 1921. He had 59 homeruns, had a .378 batting average, and 171 RBI. In 1921, the Yankees played in the World Series against the New York Giants. Ruth hurt his elbow and was told by doctors not to play. He ignored them and came off the bench as a designated hitter. Even though he had the best season of his career, the Yankees would lose to the Giants. In 1922, The Yankees would play the New York Giants again and would lose the World Series. Even though the Yankees had one of the best teams in the MLB, they could not get past their archrivals, the Giants. Even though the Yankees lost, Ruth became such an icon for the New York Yankees that when the Yankees built their new stadium in 1923 it was called the “the house that Ruth built.” On April 18, 1923, Ruth hit the first ever home run at the new Yankees Stadium. The New York Yankees again made it again to the World Series. They also had to face the New York Giants but this time they came out on top. Ruth won the Most Valuable Player in 1923.
