Life can bring a person down. When someone finally thinks it cannot get worse, life throws another curve ball. In the article “The Fourth State of Matter” by Jo Ann Beard, Beard is falling on trouble times and it does not get any easier. Her article tells a part of her life where her husband has left. her old dog is dying, and her friend shot died. Beard begins telling her story about the struggles of her old dog and how the it is close to death. She has a collie who cannot walk very well, who wets the bed and, must be let out three times a night (Beard, 1996). She mentions the dog throughout the article always telling the struggles of the dog and how it is at the end of its life. She invites her friend over to get rid of the squirrels in the attic and she notices the aging of the collie as well. Beard’s friend cries when she sees it. She is heartbroken and hopes he returns one day. She knows that he does not love her anymore but wishes he did. She does not like talking about her husband leaving her to her friends. They feel sorry for her and try to give her support. When she walked into work, she received two messages from her missing husband. The first message was from her husband and he asked to see her again and Bead became excited and hopeful. The next message was from him again, telling her to disregard the previous message (Beard, 1996). Her husband finally comes back home to see her after he hears what happens to her friend.
