In, The Odyssey, by Homer the character Odysseus displays the characteristics of curiousity, deceitfulness, and determination. Throughout the entire story Odysseus is exploring the cyclops belongings, that eventually gets him in trouble. An example of this is when Odysseus goes into the Cyclop’s cave, “I brought along, and victuals in a bag, for in my bones I knew some towering brute would be upon us soon [...] We climbed, then, briskly to the cave. But Cyclops had gone afield, to pasture his fat sheep, so we looked round at everything inside.”…
“Men go to far greater lengths to avoid what they fear than to obtain what they desire.” ~ Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code In The Odyssey, Homer utilizes characterization to validate that fear is often the root of temptation. For example he states, “I will not share your bed unless you swear the mighty oath, o goddess – to insure that you’ll forgo any thoughts of further plots.” (Homer 10.342-344) Odysseus is normally a good man but, like many men, he fears the Gods. He gives into Círcë’s charms like Hermes said he should in fear of being struck down by Athena, or being captured by Circe and having to go without Athena…
In Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, Odysseus is finally released from Calypso after seven years. Odysseus proceeded to lead his men on his way back home to be reunited with his wife, Penelope. Today, Homer is globally seen as a great leader for his men, but his clear demonstration of pride, daringness, and his pettiness made him a horrible leader. One of the biggest weaknesses for leaders is having too much pride, and Odysseus has more than enough of that, as shown in the Cyclops. Odysseus’ crew was caught by a Cyclops, but when he got away he decided to insult the Cyclops (The Cyclops. 476).…

The crew and Odysseus are angry about not being able to go home, and will do whatever it takes to get there. Odysseus and the crew gets into a tough situation and ends up stabbing a cyclops in the eye and blinds him to escape. When they get a safe distance from the island, Odysseus, filled with anger and pride yells, “Cyclops- if any man on the face of the earth should ask you who blinded you, shamed you so- say Odysseus, raider of cities” (227). This is his weakness of self centeredness and pride by wanting to take credit for all of his accomplishments. He wants to be known.…

In the book, The Odyssey of Homer, translated by Richmond Lattimore, the relationships Odysseus has with Circe, Kalypso, and Penelope all share a very different type of love. The weakest relationship Odysseus has is of respect and infatuation with Circe, it starts with fear but lasts for 1 year. Then, Kalypso’s love towards Odysseus, a bit stronger than Circe’s is full of selfishness and desperation keeping it strong for 7 years. Lastly, Penelope’s enduring and hopeful love for Odysseus makes their relationship the strongest remaining for more than 20 years. The relationships Odysseus has with Circe, Kalypso, and Penelope share love, but some are stronger than the others.…
Both the Odyssey and Great expectations involve an adventure to experience through tough adversity that they have to overcome. There is not a lot to know about Homer, but he wrote two stories called the Iliad and The Odyssey. His style of writing is a heroic poetry. Homer sets the story in the town of Troy, where a character named Odysseus- a well known hero of The Odyssey, begins his adventure. Odysseus is very intelligent and knows how to defeat his opponents by outsmarting them.…
The ancient Greeks created a moral code that consisted of eight evil thoughts that they believed made a person less human. A couple of these evil thoughts are demonstrated in the episode “The Cyclops” in the epic The Odyssey. In “The Cyclops” a storm blows Odysseus onto an island. He is trapped on the island with some of his men, and Odysseus must try to escape the island with his men by killing the Cyclops Polyphemus, son of Poseidon.…
Having a lot of pride could be blinding, and it recurrently contributes to an otiose outcome. Individuals put pride into little things accordingly from their judgement for no reason, and get hung up on the values they feel they achieve from them. When these values are proven faulty, they lash out into a demise. Having too much pride can take over one’s mentality and overthink ideas that are meant to be kept simple. In situations like this, a person can be destructive and affect people surrounded by them including family opposed to society.…

After he and his crew are caught in the Cyclops’s cave, Odysseus says, “He lunged out with his hands toward my men… he knocked them dead like pups… and ripping them limb from limb to fix his meal, he bolted them down like a mountain-lion, devoured entrails, flesh and bones” (9.324-330). In this epic simile, the crew members being eaten by the Cyclops are being compared to pups, and the Cyclops itself is being compared to the lion. This father-child comparison shows that the crew members are owned and controlled by the Cyclops and his whims and caprices, and Odysseus has not yet been able to use his cunning and skill to defeat the brutish monster. By likening the Cyclops’ behavior to that of a mountain-lion, Homer emphasizes the Cyclops’ primal instincts and its strength and physical power over such fragile humans as Homer’s shipmates. He uses graphic imagery, explaining in detail how the Cyclops determined the crewmembers’ every limb, to highlight its beastliness and danger when not contained and allowed to run wild.…
Similarly to the Cyclops’ terrifying appearance and actions, after Odysseus slaughters the suitors, the old Nurse literally describes Odysseus as “terrifying” (22: 422). Now, all these similarities make Odysseus and Polyphemos sound almost identical to each other but, Odysseus is even more of a monster than Polyphemos. A common theme in The Odyssey, is nostos, “returning home,” and oikos, “home.” The majority of the epic poem is driven by Odysseus’ lack of understanding that he needs to just go home. While traveling around and destroying the homes of others, Odysseus almost loses his own.…
In life being too prideful may lead us to hold ourselves back from a greater prize. If you think so highly of yourself you may try and protect your status instead of reaching for a higher goal . If you tell yourself you're the best but you have nothing to support it, you may end up realizing that you aren't as important as you may have thought you were. If you build a wall too high it eventually is going to fall and the break is not easily restored. The fall representing realization of overly high esteem leads to having to build your wall up all over again .…
