Odysseus has many virtues that are very helpful on his long journey back to Ithaca. For Odysseus to arrive closer to Ithaca, he and his men would have to sail past the Siren’s island. Odysseus offers to be tied to the mast to hear the sirens, as the men row the boat with wax in their ears. On (1006. 710-715) Odysseus says, “They tied me up, then, plumb amidships, back to the mast, lashed to the mast, and took themselves again to rowing. Soon as we came smartly within hailing distance, the two Sirens, moting our fast ship off their point, made ready, and they sang.” This shows that, Odysseus proved a great deal of loyalty to his men, sacrificing himself so that they could sail passed the Sirens island successfully. Another example of Odysseus using his virtues was when Athena, the goddess of wisdom and courage disguises Odysseus as a beggar and he uses his patience, so he can get his kingdom and Penelope back without being killed by the suitors. On (1026. 1120-1125) the narrator says, “Before long they will stand to right and left of us in combat, in the shouting, when the test comes our nerve against the suitors’ in my hall. Here is your part:at break of day tomorrow home with you, go mingle with our princes. The swineherd later on will take me down the port-side trail a beggar, by my looks, hangdog and old. If they make fun of me in my own courtyard, let your ribs cage up your springing heart, no matter what I suffer,

Odysseus has a strong personality trait of curiosity, which can lead him and his crew into dangerous and often deadly situations. Perhaps the darkest example of “curiosity” is shown when Odysseus decides not to commit suicide. This urge comes after his crew creates a storm by opening a bag of winds—a present from Aeolus—and sends them from their position so close to home to Aeolia. Odysseus says of this matter, “’I debated within myself whether to jump overboard and drown or stay among the living and quietly endure’” (10.50-52).…

“The Odyssey”, written by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, follows King Odysseus of Ithaka on his twenty year journey home from the Trojan War. Throughout the epic poem Odysseus must face many obstacles, some inevitable, and some the result of human mistakes. Odysseus demonstrates his arrogance time and time again, manipulating people to get what he needs to overcome these obstacles with little thought to how much their generosity will cost them. Odysseus uses his end goal to justify taking advantage of other people’s hospitality because Odysseus’ hubris won’t allow him to see his own flaws.…

Odysseus displays excessive amounts of pride and narcissism throughout his journey, and just after he departs Troy he and his men decided to plunder Ismarus where he “sacked the city [and] killed the men ”(212). This reckless behavior has spawned from pride because Odysseus believes that he is so magnificently powerful that he can do anything. Humility is a key trait for a modern hero, and Odysseus lacks humility because he is excessively narcissistic. Next, after he makes his grand escape from Polyphemus Odysseus decides to mock the beast. To taunt Polyphemus Odysseus says “say Odysseus, raider of cities gouged out your eye,” loud with pride and he does this to make it known to Polyphemus that he believes he is superior, and this only hinders his journey and endangers his crew (227).…

Despite the dramatic differences between Odysseus’ ravaging journey and my mundane journey by comparison, similarities in theme manifest themselves within both journeys; although, Odysseus’ hardships, depicted through an epic poem during 11th century BC in Greece, The Odyssey of Homer, occur centuries before my time, yet contains a fundamental resemblance. Obstacles impeding Odysseus’ odyssey back home to his original lifestyle reflect the struggles of my journey to discover my lifestyle (what I desire to pursue in college). Along with obstacles, monsters block our journey and must be defeated or bypassed to continue forward. Another hindrance would be temptations that attempt to lure Odysseus and me from our original intents and goals. The hardships that we individually…

What if the person one looks up to or longs to return is not the person they expect that person to be? In the Odyssey, by Homer, this is the case for Odysseus. In the epic poem the Odyssey, Homer's main character Odysseus portrays three different roles. Unfortunately, not all of Odysseus’s characteristics are outstanding for a biblical worldview. The reason for this is because the manner in which he handles himself as a military leader, a husband and occasionally a father, is not the manner in which a Christian should handle himself. On the other hand, Odysseus’s relationships that he has with his army, wife and family are one that are mostly carried out in the manner of a Christian. It is strange that Odysseus cares deeply for his men and as well as his son, but does not seem to be as deeply connected to his wife…
