The line "I am the first bullet that hit Sean Bell", is more powerful than some might know. Sean Bell was attending a bachelor party with two friends when an undercover policeman and his partner thought he overheard Bell say he was armed, alerting another team of plains-clothed Police Officers, they followed Bell and his friends to their car and drew their weapons and ordered them to get out of the car. Without properly identifying themselves as officers of the law, how would Bell know he wasn’t simply experiencing a typical carjacking like the everyday things that happen in the ghetto, so Bell rammed a Police Officer to escape and the officers unloaded over 50 bullets into the van. Bell was shot 4 times in the neck and was pronounced DOA, while his friend was shot 20 times and survived, the other victim was shot 5 times and survived. There can only be assumptions made as to why the police officers would think they had a gun and should pursue them, but perhaps it's because of how Hip Hop portrays black gang bangers with guns and the Police Officers intentions were pure, however the lines were blurred, and the Hip Hop culture took a loss that night.…

When Shawn “Jay Z” Carter and Kanye West proclaimed their membership to the new black elite, they were being modest in their declaration because the Hip Hop echelon had arrived long before 2011. Many of them had not only accumulated a vast amount of wealth a decade prior, but took part in the shift in qualities that determined ones elite status. This alteration from the previous black elite during the fourth wave first emerged when the Hip Hop generation was born. It ultimately came full circle when black and brown youth in urban ghettos in New York united through privations and the fervent need to alter their grim futures.…

Jenee Desmond – Harris wrote an article called “Tupac and My Non-thug Life,” which was published in an online article called The Root. The title of this article seems very contradictory and that is because it is. This article is about how Desmond – Harris, as a young privileged half white, half black teenage girl, finds herself trying to embody Tupac after his death. The contradiction of this is that Desmond-Harris did not relate to Tupac in the ways of how they grew up. Desmond – Harris had yet to confront any of life’s hard edges when Tupac had passed.…

The Golden age of rap and hip-hop is a name that was bestowed unto mainstream music, between the late 1980’s and the early 1990’s. This time period was shaped by popular figures such as Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls, NWA (Niggas with Attitude), Rakim, Slick Rick and MC Hammer. This era revolutionized “gangsta rap”, changing it from sub-conscience music to pro-violence music; however political issues and criticism of the African-American community was still prevalent in their music. Between the 1980’s and 1990’s, the most influential rappers were Tupac Shakur and Christopher George Latore Wallace (Biggie Smalls), due to their leadership role on the streets and outstanding rapping skills, they earned respect from the rap/urban community. Although…
